Philidor's Legacy
1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Ng1f3 h6
Becker's Defence. Something of a sideline but I quite like this especially because I know it has little coverage in Joe Gallagher's King Gambit book.
4. Bf1c4
Less common than 4.b3 4.d4 or 4.h4 but seems reasonable.
4... Nb8c6
Played to prevent Ne5. The usual 4... g5 of this line is OK because Black has Rh7 against Ne5.
5. d4 g5 6. O-O Bf8g7 7. c3 d6 8. Qd1b3
Still aiming at f7, but Na5 can now be an idea for Black.
8... Qd8e7 9. Bc1d2 Ng8f6 10. e5 dxe5 11. dxe5 Nf6g4
With four pieces to one on e5 and a check available to the Q on c5 to sidestep any pins along the e-file, I felt I was gaining the upper hand here.
12. Nb1a3 O-O
Now Na5 is possible as Qa4 check has been prevented.
13. Rf1e1
This allows black to threaten the smothered mate known as Philidor's Legacy.
13... Qe7c5 14. Kg1h1
White doesn't prevent the mate as he could have with Be3 but at the cost of much material.
14... Ng4f2 15. Kh1g1 Nf2h3 16. Kg1h1 Qc5g1 17. Re1xg1 Nh3f2
The classic Philidor's Legacy finish. Thanks to my opponent!
