Here are a few films that deal with the American Dream to varying degrees of grittiness that come to mind:
Glengarry Glen Ross
Midnight Cowboy
Big Night
Born On The 4th of July
Scarface
Any more suggestions?
this must be iron monkeys favourite movie but i beat him to it .
i especially liked the bit where charlton heston came across the statue of libertiy poking out of the sand on the planet of the apes and simply said "oh my god" clearly short for " dang, look what became of the american dream" ๐ต
8 mile?
Million Dollar Baby.
The Jungle, if it was ever made as a movie, would be a criticism.
TV's different, but I remember a John Wayne picture with something like the following exchange:
"Thanks for giving me a job, Mr. Wayne!"
"It's not a gift, boy. You give me an honest day's work you'll get an honest day's pay."
