But the schools are leaving out the emotional aspects of "health" I don't mind the teaching of sex education when combined with parental guidence. I am opposed to the methods used in the schools often leaving the impression that sex is a mechanical function and not an emotional investment. Morality has everything to do with it. There's more to sex educatio ...[text shortened]... ts need to take a greater role in the setting the standard and quality of what is being taught.
Advising young people that condoms can prevent STD is just a matter of health, nothing more. The rest of your concerns are another topic.

Sorry, but I disagree. The public schools are there for the education of the public's children and this includes information about health I, for one, want my kids fully informed.
Morality has nothing to do with it.
EDIT: Especially someone else's morality getting in the way of information that is potentially life-saving. I'm glad you don't run the schools KJ
it would be better if parents did it to avoid disagreements like the
one you and I are having below.
You think that having the state tell kids how to have safe sex has
nothing to do with morality, I disagree.
I'm also glad that I'm not running the public school system.

Taking an abstinence pledge is worth about as much as a peace treaty among politicians. Abstinence goes against thousands of years of human evolution, biological need, and just plain old lust. Teenagers have nowhere near the maturity to handle abstinence. Abstinence is for adults. Especially married couples. 🙂
Teenagers are going to have sex. Those that aren't having sex are thinking about it constantly and trying to find a way to have it.
Abstinence should be *encouraged* and yes it should be taught to teenagers. But to ignore the reality of sex is just ludicrous. EVERYTHING about sex should be taught in schools. Yes it's great if parents take the lead, but how many times do parents do a great job of raising their kids? If they did we wouldn't have prisons full of knocked up, dope pushing, car-jacking, crackheads.
Abstinence is a fantasy. The pledge the original poster signed or spoke is worthless.
Originally posted by ivanhoeFine, teach kids the facts that condoms are X percent effective only in preventing STD's. Don't call it "safe sex"; who cares? Just give them the information so they have a better chance of not catching a disease. I really don't understand why that is a problem.

To deny a teenager sex is both immoral and unatural, I was abstained back then, but not by choice, if I could ever choose, I would of f**ked, f***ked, f***ked around that time as nature intended...
Originally posted by sasquatch672Yep. All good points sasquatch. Your post sums up what it comes down to for a teenager. They're gonna do it, so lets show them ALL of the good and bad. If they abstain voluntary I think that's great, but the history of man and womankind shows that abstinence is an anomaly. Especially for teenagers.
"...knocked-up, dope pushing, car-jacking crackheads."
This eloquent phrase put a smile on my face. Is there any ambiguity here? Awesome! wib, you are the king!
The whole abstinence thing gets me. Yeah, sure, in school a kid should learn that abstinence is the only sure way of preventing STD's. But really - take away sex from a teenager an ...[text shortened]... so wrapped up about sex. It's almost like the whole damn country has some ridiculous hang up.
Originally posted by kirksey957Yep, and if I ever get lucky to have kids one of these days, and if my son is a teenager and says, "dad, I had sex with a girl", I would smile and say, "that's great son, let's invite her over for dinner". I know how being able to exercise those sexual feelings is very important to human beings and mandatory towards building a happy life, I wouldn't want my kids to be denied and put up with the misery I've gone through...

I don't think we are all that far apart on this issue then.
Let me say this about your quote directly above. As long as the kids are merely informed about the effective way to use condoms, without a moral lesson, without an advocation of their use as a way around anyone's morals or ethics, and so forth; then it is just a health issue.
Sex is a beautiful thing. Every function and instinct of a human is to procreate. It is the sole reason anything exists. Without procreation the earth would be dead.
WHY are they trying to tell kids not to have sex? It's absurd, they should teach the kids as much as they can and then some so the kids can shag each other rotten and be smart about it. The smart ones wont get STD's, the dumb ones will. Nature wins.
