Normally I would I agree, but Putin is a man (like his former Soviet counterparts) who only understands one thing - Domination. If Putin thinks he can push a country around, you can bet he'll do it. If a more powerful country pushes back, he'll back down. The Soviets didn't back down, the USA did. The USSR put nukes in Cuba in response to the USA putting nukes in Turkey to get those nukes out of Turkey. It worked. The USA backed down.
You fell for the propaganda back then too. The soviets didn't start the Cuban Missile Crisis, the USA did by putting nukes in Turkey. Russia doesn't want them in Ukraine. That is why Russia cannot allow Ukraine to join NATO.

I watched as the Soviet warships turned tail and headed back to Russia when they came face to face with the American armada little guy. I also watched as the USSR agreed to remove the missile launchers from Cuba. All because President John F Kennedy had the balls to stand up to Russia.
You don't know your ass from ice cream!

Yeah. Sure. That’s how it went.
The USSR missiles were removed from Cuba and US missiles were removed from Italy and Turkey.
As for US tactics, hardly a shining bloody moment of diplomacy. If it wasn’t for Khrushchev not being a complete psycho, the world would have ended (not to mention the U-boat captain making a notable decision as well).

The USA started the Cuban Missile crisis by putting nukes in Turkey and it ended when the USA backed down and took them out. Stop trying to rewrite history.
The American armada didn't remove nukes from Cuba, the USSR did. That happened because the USSR had the balls to stand up to the USA's aggression.

Don't be silly. Khrushchev was not a psycho. He wanted the nukes out and he accomplished that. He was smart. The USA started it all by putting nukes in the USSR's back yard (so to speak) so he put them in the USA's back yard. How do you like it?
Smart. That is what Khrushchev was.

Putin isn’t Khrushchev and in terms of capability Russia is nothing like the Soviet Union / Muscovite Empire.

@sh76 saidChina is going to cushion his swallow dive into reality but it’s a shame he has condemned what could be a European powerhouse into a gangster state western outpost of Beijing.
This might feel good in the short term because we can't stand Putin and have fallen in love with the heroic Ukranians (except No1, I guess).
But Putin getting more desperate is also bad news. Unless he's toppled (unlikely), as be gets backed further and further into the corner, his incentive to avoid using chemical, biological and even nuclear weapons diminishes.
When Puti ...[text shortened]... is on the ropes is the best time to offer him a deal that will allow him to back down but save face.

@sh76
Except there is no saving grace for Putin, he will push with whatever weapons are available including nukes.
Like you said, the more desperate he is the more likely he will be to use banned weapons but I think even Putin realizes the danger to humanity nukes represent.
Maybe.
the entire world minus the fewer by the day Putin's admireres know he bungled this big time. He just needs some deal so he can brag to his followers about "winning".
@zahlanzi saidI think if he asks for more than the Crimea the breakaway statelets in the east and a signed agreement not to join nato this will drag itself into a bloodletting insurgency. I don’t care about Putins war machine smashing its head off a brick wall for the next ten years but the Ukrainians deserve better
