The Soviets didn't back down, the USA did. The USSR put nukes in Cuba in response to the USA putting nukes in Turkey to get those nukes out of Turkey. It worked. The USA backed down.

THE USSR ONLY PUT NUKES IN CUBA BECAUSE OF
THE US/CIA SPONSORED INVASION OF CUBA,
commonly referred to as ''THE BAY OF PIGS.'

Is there a paper trail of some deal worked out where the US pulls nukes from Turkey?
The only thing I know about that time was my reaction to the missiles in Cuba was to enlist in the Air Force, got to Lackland and first meal was Thanksgiving, in the officers mess🙂 We were not officers, but I think they just cut the staff so they only needed the one mess. Anyway that was my intro to my next four years.....
@sonhouse saidUkraine is pretty big relative to other countries. I would not expect anybody to take the whole country quickly by force. Word of Putin's defeat looming is wildly premature.

As the civilian death toll in Ukraine grows the pressure on NATO from the citizens of its constituent nations to intervene and simply crush the Russian forces in Ukraine will be irresistible.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the October Crisis of 1962 (Spanish: Crisis de Octubre), the Caribbean Crisis (Russian: Карибский кризис, tr. Karibsky krizis, IPA: [kɐˈrʲipskʲɪj ˈkrʲizʲɪs]), or the Missile Scare, was a one-month, four-day (16 October – 20 November 1962) confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union which escalated into an international crisis when American deployments of missiles in Italy and Turkey were matched by Soviet deployments of similar ballistic missiles in Cuba. Despite the short time frame, the Cuban Missile Crisis remains a defining moment in U.S. national security and nuclear war preparation. The confrontation is often considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.[3]
In response to the presence of American Jupiter ballistic missiles in Italy and Turkey, and the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1961, Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev agreed to Cuba's request to place nuclear missiles on the island to deter a future invasion. An agreement was reached during a secret meeting between Khrushchev and Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro in July 1962, and construction of a number of missile launch facilities started later that summer.
-------------------------------
Accordingly, the failed Bay of Pigs invasion did have a say in the matter for Cuba and hence, USSR.
But all links that I look at make the primary reason that the USSR tried to place nuclear missiles
into Cuba is because of American nukes in Turkey and Italy. I knew this from that great
mini series "Missiles of October". If you have a chance to view it, do so.
And just FYI...
Turkey, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Netherlands all are NATO member nations that have agreements to host US nuclear weapons. Gee, ya think that may be why Russia hates NATO? Surround them with nuclear missiles, that's really good for human relations.

@metal-brain saidI think it is definitely possible that Russia is succeeding in its strategy and the West does not understand it.

Why are invasions only bad when the other side invades other nations?
@earl-of-trumps saidWhat you Americans do not get is that nato is a voluntary alliance of 30 nations. Russia has its nuclear weapons right on the door step of that alliance, who is Putin to get mad about other nations having nukes on his doorstep,

Nukes on his doorstep is a perfectly logical reaction to a nation that has built its foreign policy around the use of nukes.
All Putin has to do to avoid grief from nato is stay inside his own borders in relation to his nato neighbours.
