I don't consider the law of the land to be -- necessarily -- in line with the American Ideals. I think that American's idolize the character of the Outlaw (think Clint Eastwood) for the very reason that they have a set of values higher than the law.

In the United States we acknowledge an individual's inalienable Right to Speak Freely.

There's a start.

We also have a Right to Defend Ourselves, and assault is against the law.

Bin Laden attacked the USA, and Keith wrote a song about it. How is that responding to insults with violence? If anything it's the opposite. He advocates res ...[text shortened]... lence. Dr. King was a true American, and he was peaceful.

By the way, I love that song 😵
The free speach route makes sense to me, but I think that some violent acts might fall under that category. If Adult Male X (yes I'm a bit sexist on this point) says that my "mother's a whore," it is reasonable to expect my communicative response to be delivered with a fist rather than a verbal remark.

In conjunction with the above post, I think that It is occasionally consistent with American Ideals to respond violently to a verbal insult.

What's "18th Street"?

EDIT: nevermind, I googled it.

Just another rodent organization that does stuff like this:

It also happens to be the one that my cousin is serving life in prison for killing in the name of.

It's reasonable to expect it. It's also reasonable to expect a bullet if you go tell the gangsters in the neighborhood that you plan to compete with them in drug dealing. That doesn't make it an American ideal.

You THINK? Do you think so because of your own experiences, or is your thinking simply a false personification? I loved those Italian made movies staring Eastwood. I think a lot of the rest of the world did also.

Those that have a set of values higher than the Law go to jail.

Granny.

He thinks so because of our long history of rebellion against unjust law, starting with the Revolution. The law often eventually gets changed in such cases.
