I wouldn't call Chavez and Morales socialdemocrats. Anthony Giddens
wouldn't be very proud of them, lol

I rather call SD Bachelet or Lula himself, for example, but not Chavez
nor Morales.

Exactly, that's why when people call 'Social Democracy' Socialism I tend to raise an eyebrow...

Yeah, but I'm a Social Democrat and I dislike both Chavez or Morales types of government. So yes, I like to separate the notions.

Do you? 🙂
So what's your definition of Social Democracy?

A democracy that cares for people 🙄

No rejection of markets (or anti-market rhetoric), but no worship of markets neither.

How could the situation elsewhere be changed -- with teachers better respected, better qualified, or better paid?

Can it be a school's responsibility to enforce discipline?
I can't argue with you. Where I live the church pastor has been convicted of selling crack to church members...

Also the Flint Police have been convicted of selling the cocaine they had locked up from drug busts to people on the street.

The teachers? Well, it was reported that a large percentage of them got a job with phony certificates and several of them even had a record for child molestation! 😲

Yeah, my country is in it's last days.

And Chavez is rejecting Markets?

I thought he was just stopping the Venezuela assets to be stolen by US companies, in order to keep them instead for the people of Venezuela.

Ok I admit it's kind of off beat attitude in those days were big companies empty 3rd world countries, but eh somebody has to try different direction, no?

Well if you let the market in, you won't be able to control it.
Companies give jobs, so state do as they are told to.
State won't do anything without the money from banks.
Accordingh to BRI, the total amount of the currency trade is 400 Trillions a day (40 times the money made in the USA).
And you think any state will control that or tell them what to do.

Aint too sure about that.

Don't worry it's like that everywhere, no need to move just for that.

Enjoy the ride 😀

Chavez only coherent way out is a rejection of markets. If not, he's just another hypocrite speaking 'in the name of the people', displaying xenophobic behaviour with his anti-American bs. I guess some people think it's ok if it's directed at the US.

So no, I don't think the state should directly control markets or tell companies what to do. Regarding markets, the state should intervene in monetary policy and clear cases of market failure on which regulation must be imposed. I also think the state should have a redistributive function, to minimize inequalities of opportunity. That's it, in a nutshell.

I also don't think companies or profits are cancers to society. As you said yourself, they bring jobs but also investment, new technologies, new procedures, new products, etc. Countries have a lot to gain if they are open to private projects, both domestic or foreign. The key is not believing this doesn't require any regulation.

Got to go, sorry if the post came out a bit messy...

Interestingly, India has an inferior higher education system that traps millions into low-paying, dead end jobs:
