@wildgrass saidI wonder when it will be etched into historical fact that shutting down public schools into the Fall 2020 term (and certainly beyond that) was a crime against humanity. My guess is another 5-10 years.
Pretty bad. The explanation from CPS appears to indicate that the schools on this list are "option" schools for students who have previously dropped out and missed large chunks of education time. So it's not really appropriate to judge them on grade level proficiency. They also note their overall nombers are similar to other urban area schools.
Anecdotally, I know severa ...[text shortened]... school system is dealing with the remaining students and teachers who don't want to be.there either.
@sh76 saidI doubt history will be kind to COVID minimizers like yourself. Where your policy preferences were implemented like under DeSantis, it cost tens of thousands of lives. There would have been hundreds of thousands of more funerals if your nutty ideas were implemented nationwide.

@shavixmir saidOn the other hand, shav, what are the chances that all these sources could be wrong:
So, someone’s claiming that in 53 different schools, not 1 pupil is proficient in maths and reading.
Not 1 pupil in 53 schools.
And you take that data as true?
Seriously. What are the bloody chances? Do the maths? It’s so bloody unlikely it’s not even worth speculating on.
When you’re at school, you’re supposed to grow a “in the ballpark feeling” about things. So ...[text shortened]... roficient in reading and maths…
Go on. A ballpark feeling on that: how likely could that be true?

So sorry that CNN, MSNBC etc do not have an article themselves, so this is an excellent demonstration
as to why you should not rely on their heavily biased views as to what NEWS really is
@wildgrass saidIf 55 schools are "prior dropout schools", then we have a big problem of another kind.

The bottom line is, Chicago SUCKS
@sh76 saidOne of the articles I read said that the current scores are lower than prepandemic

Wasn't there just ONE parent in those schools that could tutor their lagging kid? Sure makes you wonder
@sh76 saidI think we would do things differently in hindsight, but certainly was not malicious intent in any of the school closure decisions made in real time.

Neglect in planning for this eventuality and political CYA from leaders was the biggest problem.

Mhmmm… yeah… right.
@no1marauder saidWe'll see.

Studies are coming out showing that mask mandates were useless (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/21/opinion/do-mask-mandates-work.html), that having had covid was at as protective as having been vaxxed (https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/natural-immunity-protective-covid-vaccine-severe-illness-rcna71027) making vax mandates for people who'd had covid pointless, and the research on whether lockdowns did much has been mixed, at best. The price we exacted from our children on the altar of these draconian policies will be our generation's cross to bear.

The house of cards is coming down on the covid panic porn industry. The good news is that since most of the media was complicit in it, there will be plenty of amnesty to go around.
@wildgrass saidI would agree up to a point. I'd say September 2020, but certainly no later than March of 2021.

Schools that stayed closed after that point were grossly negligent to a point indistinguishable from malice.
@sh76 saidYeah we've had this discussion before. I'm pretty confident that if we had clear and consistent guidelines at federal and state levels to schools during the pandemic, it would have prevented almost all of the problems. Politicians didn't want to make decisions so they punted. Instead of strong leadership... We got tweets

OPEN THE SCHOOLS

It's hard to think of any policy which would have been as reckless in Fall 2020 as fully reopening in person learning in the public schools. That was the period was the pandemic was fully raging and the vaccines didn't exist. Forcing large groups of people to spend hours together indoors in cramped quarters (with no masks of course since that would be "torture"😉 would have been homicidal. And for what? How much death and sickness in your warped view would have been worth a (maybe) few points on standardized test scores?
You've completely went off the rails on this subject and really need to rationally reevaluate your extreme positions.
@no1marauder saidYou're treating it as though it were a hypothetical "would have been."

Basically all of Europe had schools open in the Fall of 2020.
https://www.npr.org/2020/11/13/934153674/lessons-from-europe-where-cases-are-rising-but-schools-are-open
My kids were in camp from June 29, 2020 (which is the first day that King Andrew allowed it) and they were in school from the first normal day that Fall. So were millions of kids across the country who went either to private schools or to sane public school districts.
Certainly, our results in the Fall were not as bad as the Spring. Not even close. and the country didn't start having bad covid results that year until cold season had set in.
Apparently, according to you, Europe is also Full Metal Brain.

(PS: If you capitalized Full Metal Brain because you were punning it to Full Metal Jacket, that was actually pretty clever, so nice job.)
