U.S. Drug-Overdose Deaths Soared Nearly 30% in 2020
Overdose deaths began rising in the fall of 2019 with the spread of fentanyl, but really took off starting in March 2020, when pandemic-driven shutdowns and physical-distancing measures set in. “It’s really one of those things where 2020 turbocharged something that was already wildly out of control,” Dr. Saloner said.

If you read the article you will find that this increase in drug overdose death is helping to drive down the average life expectancy. The social isolation has had many negative mental health results, one of which is increased deaths due to drug overdose.
I guess legalizing marijuana use in many states is not keeping people from doing these other drugs.
Lock-downs were an unfortunate necessity and it's sad that so many people suffered mental health issues from it.
A year later, people (who are vaccinated) can walk around freely, for the most part, without masks. So hopefully, the worst of it is over and daylight is coming.
You know what would be great? If there was universal healthcare that covered mental health issue.
What's prolonging the pandemic from being behind us is all the anti-vaxxers and conservatives who refused to take the pandemic seriously.
@vivify
You do know that getting vaccinated does not mean you cannot get COVID. It does not mean you cannot get other people sick.
I can walk around freely, but I guess that is because I live in a state with freedom.
It is interesting to see people who blame the lowering of life expectancy on COVID, but ignore other extra deaths that are the result of government policy.
@eladar saidVaccines like the Pfizer and Moderna ones have a roughly 95% effectiveness rate. So while a vaccine doesn't guarantee 100% protection, it's high enough that it's worth getting.

You're making things up. No one is ignoring depression, drug use or death resulting from isolation. The threat from *not* having social distancing measures is greater than forsaking them.

No, they weren't.
India ignored the threat of COVID variants and refused to implement lockdowns. They are now suffering a state of emergency where scores of people have lost their lives or met severe health issues.
So lockdowns were indeed necessary.
@eladar saidZahlanzi says there is no proof drugs caused those deaths. They all drank water the day they took drugs, so it might be the water.

@vivify saidIndia cannot implement lockdowns without the lockdowns killing people. It is a third world country. People starve to death if you lockdown.

How did lockdowns help Michigan? Despite the strict policies imposed by Gov. Whitmer our state still had the highest covid case rate in the country. It seems to have been all for nothing.
@metal-brain saidWrong. India already implemented lockdowns in March of last year.

That's because people in Michigan openly defied the lockdowns in protests against them; so much so, that police needed to be called to calm the crowds angry about protests. This made national headlines.

I know and it was a huge disaster!
You are lying about Michigan, there was little defiance at all. Stop lying. I live in Michigan. I know what happened in my state.

As if Michigan was the only state with protests. It happened in the majority of states.

@vivify saidThis is not true based on what an epidemiologist from Yale said. He claimed 50 to 60 percent.

But hey, if you want to believe what people involved in the vaccine production say, go for it.
