I understand, you're saying Iran-Contra never happened. Thanks for the heads-up.
I don't like the fact that they dealt with Iran, but what the hey. There is a lot I don't like that doesn't seem to affect the world in any way.
No, I don't hate you, as I've made clear before I'm not anti-American at all, although I really hate the ridiculous special relationship concept and long for another Ted Heath to kick it into touch and turn our collective backs on the Golwaterite diktats of Washington. If a 3 percentile majority of the US electorate favours this kind of Backlashite guff, fine, but the rest of us haven't signed up for it.
As for Iran-Contra, it may have "worked well" in the short-term from a narrow McCarthyite point of view - although the destruction of US influence in the OAS this year, the Chavez breakthrough and the increasing influence of China in Latin America suggests that long-term it had a negative impact - but the point is that it was Republicans playing God with the lives of American hostages, actively working to delay or even endanger their lives and liberation. Going further back, there's yet another precedent for this in Nixon's sabotage of LBJ's peace deal in Vietnam in '68. All pols will play God with people's lives, and the Republicans are no exception.
