Of course dyslexia is not a fictional malady, but here in the UK it's true that the amount of students that claim it is ridiculous.

Many do so because it gives them advantages, like not being penalized in exams for spelling and grammar mistakes.

My father was truly ambidextrous. So both my sister and my brother have had mixed brain dominance issues. Both had difficulty learning to read until my Dad came up with a different approach from that of the public schools here in the US. My brother is left handed but is a right handed golfer and batted right handed. He threw left handed.

I am totally right handed. But I transpose numbers when I write or try to memorize them. I do not do that if I type. When I brought this up, my Dad used to say "go figure."

My Dad liked to ask us what a dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac does ...

Many studenet do, I personally did not

But "true" dyslexic people think a different way, sometimes its too much for "normal" people

It's probably true that an overwhelming majority of self-proclaimed dyslectics is just stupid or lazy. It's a pity for those that really do have the disability.

At my University, dyslexic students are afforded a number of benefits: Free Laptop, Printer/Scanner (and a grant for paper), voice recording equipment, a grant to go towards paying for an internet connection, and also , of course, extra time in exams et al.

Although I can see the benefits of giving dyslexics advantages in vocational degrees, the reality is that most degrees are effectively testing the ability of the student to work, and the student's intellect in congruence with that. The degree is the proof that you give to your would-be-employer.

The same goes for benefits for the young (although when I was young I was a slow reader, I had friends that were even slower -- how come that is not an acceptable enough hindrance to gain extra time in exams? The same would go for a slow writer.

Is this not, then, giving an unfair advantage to those that will have to work without these advantages later in life? And why can't I have a free laptop. 🙁

You can get a free laptop if you explain what difficulties you are
having to your institution. I think in your case you'll get one that
you need to hold upside down and shake to reset *)

Security doesn't take kindly to any rough -handling of the girls in our men's clubs. Well not unless you're a vip customer and have paid in advance.

If you are interested in dyslexia, you might find Maryanne Wolf, Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain (2007) of interest.

I see what you're saying and it brings to mind the fact that there are so many chess players here and so few able to apply the same kind of analysis to life ... You have to see the entire board, not just the two pieces in direct confrontation. You have to see what comes next, what would happen if you did one thing or another. Using that sort of analysis, one sees that behind each side along the same diagonal or file is another, more powerful piece providing cover.
