@no1marauder saidBy not picking up, you're missing out on a great chance for an extended warranty on your 2019 Escalade.
I mean if you're so paranoid you don't want to give out your phone number, don't. To me, it's no BFD; if Facebook wants my number they can have it - I usually don't answer the few calls I get from numbers I don't know anyway.

@metal-brain saidWhoopdeedo !
@moonbus
That is exactly what I did. Twitter accepted me without a phone number.

@moonbus saidActually, facebook accepted me without a phone number when creating my account. Then they decided they wanted my phone number and made up a BS excuse to do it.
Whoopdeedo !
They falsely claimed they wanted my phone number to verify my identity. Since they do not have my phone number that is impossible. They do not have my phone number to verify my identity. They are liars.
@metal-brain saidOh you idiot child they use your phone number at future log ins by sending a code to your phone which you then use to log in.

Makes your account much less hack able and deters trolls with multiple accounts unless they can be bothered buying multiple phones.

@kevcvs57 saidRight, the "future". Exactly my point.

That completely undercuts facebook letting me create an account without a phone number. Why can't they give an email option like most do? Is it because they want to allow the NSA to monitor my cell phone movements which cannot be done via email?
17 Apr 23
@metal-brain saidNo it’s because they can sell your phone number along with your other details to targeted advertisers based on the algorithm that they feed them, along with your preferences, into. Have you read the terms and conditions.

But my favourite explanations is that they suspect you of running multiple accounts for the purpose of disseminating misinformation.

@metal-brain saidYou might try Truth Social. They probably won’t object to your sort of content.

@kevcvs57 saidSelling my phone number is what I suggested from the beginning, but since an email is not optional it must be to monitor my cell phone movements. I don't have more than 1 account. That is a stupid explanation.

I simply do not get a cell phone signal where I live. City people.....
That is why I call city people citiots. City people are idiots. They think everybody gets a cell signal because they do. The thought of someone unable to get a cell signal does not even enter their mind. Citiots.

@metal-brain saidUm.

Geez, how to put this...
Well, you do know that "two-step verification" protocols have TWO steps...right?
For someone to use your phone number to hijack your account in the way you describe, they would already have to possess your prior "one-step verification" information. In other words you would have to have already been hacked.
@soothfast saidIt is a 3 step process, not 2. Facebook suspended my account after creating an account by claiming I posted something that didn't meet their community standards which is a lie. They said I could appeal the suspension, but first I had to give them my phone number to confirm my identity. That was the second lie. They would have to have my phone number first to confirm my identity and they did not require it for creating that account. They said if I did not appeal the suspension within 30 days the account would be deleted. That was their 3rd lie. It is still up, but suspended so I cannot access it.
Um.

Facebook accepted me without a phone number when creating my account. That is the time to get a phone number if verification of identity to prevent an imposter from hijacking my account. If I was an imposter I could have hijacked the account by later logging on (which I did) and putting in any phone number like a common burner phone.
They already have my email address. That is all that is needed to verify it is me. Can you explain why that is not enough? You seem to be an apologist for facebook's shenanigans. Is it because they already have your phone number and you want me to lack the same privacy you do?
The bottom line is facebook sucks. I call them fascistbook. I prefer Twitter.

@no1marauder saidElon Musk revealed that the US government had full access to people’s private Twitter DMs. You can bet facebook does the same thing as twitter used to.
Some of us old.timers remember when they used to put all phone numbers in a big book and drop it off at everyone's doorstep! Crazy, huh!
There's Caller ID, spam filters and voice mails these days

You have no privacy on facebook at all. Fascistbook!

@Soothfast
Fascistbook censors the truth.

@metal-brain saidYou clearly do not get it. I have accounts at many websites going back well over a decade. Gradually over recent years, one by one, they started pestering me to set up two-factor authentication to add another layer of security to my usual username and password. Some places I did this through e-mail, other places with a phone number. In the latter case I would get a confirmation code via a text message that I would enter into the website.

It is really simple, though it does require possessing a rudimentary facility with technology. Yet like with everything else (e.g. graphene in vaccines, Illuminati conspiring to sterilize humanity, etc.) you see this issue through a lens of paranoia that appears so severe as to be clinical in nature.
I really, really, really urge you to get help. If you have health insurance, it usually covers psychological and psychiatric treatments.
P.S. I have never had a Facebook account, or a Twitter account, or any kind of social media account. It's not something I need in my life.
