Well, I can only say that I've driven diesel engined cars for most of my driving life..when I started driving it was about £1.30 gallon (US $3) and that was 25yrs ago nearly. Petrol (gas) was £2 gallon at that time but the petrol engined car was far far superior in performance, not MPG. Over the years the performance of diesel engined cars I've owned has improved vastly. 10yrs ago I owned a small Ford 1.8 liter diesel developing about 70BHP and returning about 40MPG. The price of diesel was still relatively cheap, about £3.90 gallon but at that stage the gas price was about the same ( for the first time in Uk ). 40% of all cars sold in UK are diesel and given the performance of the modern common rail diesel, that would get higher. My present car develops as much power as the petrol equivelent, 180BHP for 2.5 liter V6 unit and returning over 40 MPG average. My car will return 40MPG at 95MPH try getting that in the equivilent petrol !! Ok so it loses 8MPH top end and ok, the servicing a little more expensive but I get it all back when I sell it. My car was £1600 more than the petrol model but I pay 2/3 of the tax due to less co2 per kg. The problem now owning a diesel engined car is that the government recognise that everyone would, or will, buy/utilise one given the option ( unless you're a purist or complete petrol head as diesels still make a 'little' noise)...the price of diesel is now nearly US $12 (TWELVE) gallon and the government will hit it further as more buy them. We have the cheapest diesel in Europe PRE TAX, fact yet petrol is nearly $1.50 cheaper...it's all tax and we've had enough. The price of oil may drop but one thing is for sure, diesel will not ever be cheaper than gas again....too much money to earn for this idiot crowd that govern us. Talking of 'idiot government' makes me think of another personal rant of mine....immigration...but I'll save you from that one 🙂 Dean.
