Before TV and the internet.
On the other hand, it would be nice to see someone be electable without being "telegenic". But I agree that's asking an awful lot. On the other hand, solving New Jersey's property tax problem is also asking an awful lot and the politics genie is only willing to fulfill so many wishes. So Christie better'd lose a few pounds between now and the campaign for 2016. (I seriously doubt he'll solve much of NJ's problems in time to be a player in the 2012 campaign season which starts only a little more than a year from now.)

Big wins in VA and NJ could be the start of a resurgence of common sense Republican policies.
Hoffman's loss in NY-23 shows that ideologues and extremists continue to generally lose and hopefully this discourages the GOP from backing far right conservatives and may help secure the nomination of Crist over Rubio in Florida, which will most likely mean a moder ...[text shortened]... last night. Now all we need is a Yankee win tonight and all will be right with the World.

The scary part for the Dems now is, they can no longer blame "W" for their ills. Now they have to stand on their own two feet and their is precious little to stand on. In fact, they are making matters worse by spending like "W" and favoring policies that will cost voters more tax money. The problem is, where are the jobs? Where is the growth? Why is it none of our salaries are going up but taxes and inflation continue to go up? We are sinking and no one seems to care. If this continues, 2010 will be D-Day.

Originally posted by whodeyWell, 2010 will look better, but unemployment will still likely be fairly high this time next year (not 10% high, but above 5😵. Since as Mel said, the average Joe doesn't understand business cycles, they'll ask why the Dem's screwed things up so much. They'll counter that they inherited it (kind of hard to swallow for the public, though the crisis really doesn't have much to do with either party in particular). We'll see, but I could see the Reps regaining seats in close or traditionally Rep areas.

For the Reps to take a more serious position at the national stage, they'll have to get there party straightened out, and they'll have to put some more moderates back into their ranks. It's like a baseball team. It's great to have a line up of sluggers that slam home runs and a couple ace pitchers that throw 100+ and have mean action, but you've gotta have some clutch players on your team that can play small ball, field, and come in out of the bullpen in relief to be a successful team.
BTW, what are rhinos? You've been using that word for a while now. I get that they are like elephants (Reps) but not elephants. Is there more to it?

Originally posted by telerionI don't deny that the Republicans need to get things "straightened out". In fact, I have no interest in them if they don't. What this means to me, however, is that they don't pander to moderates. It is what got us in the mess we are in now. For once, they need to stand on principle and let the chips fall where they may. Otherwise, what does it matter if they even get into office? They will go along with what the left wants to do in a round about way eventually if they don't stop comprimising. It is one of the reasons why "W" fell from grace and why McCain lost. No conservative wants to get behind a wolf in sheeps clothing.
