Why will fewer people die? Excepting maybe handgun accidents, I don't see how you could believe that.
When you say handgun do you mean any gun or just pistols?
How do you stop a guy who comes in your house (when guns are banned) and the guy has a gun?
a. let him take all your stuff!
b. fight him with no gun (90% of death)
c. get the gun you hide under your bed and blow him away! (or make him stop if your feeling nice)
I pick C.
Here in the uk you can use force to stop robbers and you can say it was protecting your home and your family!

C = 50% - 100 % death, depending on the Gods.

I pick a. Stuff really isn't that important.
A ban on guns in the USA would be unworkable. They're too much in love with their guns.
The only way to tackle the 9000+ gun annual gun homicides in the US is stiffer penalties. As well as 9000+ homicides, there are also about 16000 accidental gun deaths, the main reason being that the person holding the gun "didn't know it was loaded".
I'm glad I live in a (relatively) unarmed society. We don't need guns. We've never had more than 100 gun homicides in any calendar year.

Yes you're right. The government should not only kill the murderer but his whole family as well.
i liked the bit in bowling for columbine when the canadian police officer couldn't remember how many gun-related crimes they'd had in the last few years. he had to look up his records. there was one. it was an american...
as for stuff being taken, there's insurance. and chances are that that guy's not gonna have a gun if guns are illegal...
Originally posted by XanthosNZYes stiffer penalties! As it stands right now if you commit a murder here in the US, you'll go to a Country Club. Depending on how good your lawyer is you'll get 7 years to 30 years, MAYBE life, very seldom the death penalty.
Stiffer penalties?

In prison you'll have 3 squares, cable TV, library, exercise room etc. All provided by me, the taxpayer so yes stiffer penalties or at least make it a prison.
And don't give me the crap that the prisoners, especially murderers, have rights. They've taken away another human's basic right to life!!!!

We don't need them. Fewer people will die. That's it.
The main problem is people are not held responsible for their actions/inactions. Enforce the current laws and enforce training/safety and gun deaths will decline significantly.
Life will still be dangerous, people still die crossing the street, golfing and driving their car.
