We don't need them. Fewer people will die. That's it.
Today is the anniversary of the Port Arthur Massacre, where a fruit loop with a semi-automatic slaughtered 35 people. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_Massacre
Now I know we are talking about handguns here (which are banned in Australia) but after the massacre further restrictions were placed on gun ownership and lo and behold the murder rate and accident rate caused by guns fell quite dramatically.

You point and shoot and, chances are, you hit. Handguns are horrible for home defense. Most people end up missing their target and hitting their neighbor. There really is no good arguement for owning handguns. I grew up with guns. I own two shotguns, a .270 rifle and a .50 caliber muzzle loader, all of which I use for hunting. Handguns and automatic weapons are made for only one reason, to kill people. If you argue for the right to own them you need to re-evaluate why you own them. Do they make you feel like a big man? Is it to compensate for a small penis? Unless you are a cop or a soldier you have no need for a handgun.
How do you stop a guy who comes in your house (when guns are banned) and the guy has a gun?
a. let him take all your stuff!
b. fight him with no gun (90% of death)
c. get the gun you hide under your bed and blow him away! (or make him stop if your feeling nice)
I pick C.
Here in the uk you can use force to stop robbers and you can say it was protecting your home and your family!

(professional hunter) cop or a soldier you have no need (to hunt animals) for a handgun." And, to press the arguement, why should killing a criminal committing a crime be considered worse than killing an animal minding its own business?

Originally posted by DelmerWell, I don't hunt very often when I do I hunt for food. I hunt elk and take one a year and fill my freezer for the cost of a tag. I hunt some duck and geese, but not very often. I think you know why hunting "an animal minding its own business" is different than killing a human. Have you ever fired your weapons at another person? I doubt it. You just own them to make yourself feel like a big man. Give me a good reason that you carry a concealed weapon. One good reason is all that I ask for. Do you carry large amounts of cash? You can argue all you want against hunting, but for every arguement against it I will give you two for it. Do you know the circumstances behind every crime committed? Have you ever read Le Miserable? Sometimes good people commit crimes, do you think that they should all be shot? If it were up to people like you shoplifters would be shot on site. Put the gun down! You don't need it.

Hunt to your heart's content. 2. No, I've never fired at another person. 3. I carry because I'd never be able to live with myself if I had to witness the torture and killing of a child or some other defenseless victim without being able to take some concrete action to stop it. 4. I don't believe I said that "all shoplifters should be shot". Perhaps you could point out to me where I said that. 5. Put the gun down yourself, CL. You won't starve.

Really, the best deal is a good dog. 99% of the time, this will do the trick. (It might do more damage to your house at first - but there are other benefits.)
Originally posted by CliffLandinThe last I knew it's illegal for a private citizen to own automatic weapons in the United States. But for some reason they seem to get into the hands of gangs and drug dealers. I can think of a couple of reasons to own hanguns. Let's see: target shooting, competitive combat shooting, silhouette shooting, fast draw competitions, I believe there is even olympic target pistol competition, but not sure. Also pistol hunting is a very fast growing sport in the US.

Yes people are killed with them, but let's stop coddling the criminals, I for one am sick of it!!
Originally posted by sasquatch672Source your stats, SQ. And of the % who die each year from gun deaths I suggest that well over 50% of those deaths improve society, which means a net positive effect.
My friend, your numbers are gravely misstated. It's more like 70,000 gun deaths in the US each year. 3,000 people died on September 11 and we invaded two countries. Over 20 times that number die in gun deaths, and we do nothing.
Originally posted by sasquatch672Just curious as to where you got the 70,000 figure from? Last I saw was around 30,000 and that was from a Harvard University study.

Yes stiffer penalties! As it stands right now if you commit a murder here in the US, you'll go to a Country Club. Depending on how good your lawyer is you'll get 7 years to 30 years, MAYBE life, very seldom the death penalty.
In prison you'll have 3 squares, cable TV, library, exercise room etc. All provided by me, the taxpayer so yes stiffer penalt ...[text shortened]... especially murderers, have rights. They've taken away another human's basic right to life!!!!
