Freedom comes with risks.
One can still wear a seatbelt (emerge unscathed), and kill a family in the other car. Risk is another word that is never used by libs, along with Freedom, perseverance, liberty, independence, independent, such as that.
The elephant in the room along these discussions is Control. Control by the government, to really being home their main vision, which is to control 'The People".

Geez. You watch too many movies (or maybe just too much CNN).

Real people don't live in fear of being gunned down while having a coffee in a mall.
pumpkin, your children are doing drills on what to do during mass shootings.

don't tell me "real people" don't live in fear

Hi Z, just wanted to pop in, I worked with an engineer named Alex Paunescu for a few years when I was working as a Varian rep at Intel in Jerusalem.
Very smart dude! After Jerusalem he was involved in a startup company in New Jersey and said I saw your work in Jerusalem, would you be my maintenance department?
So that began another ten year project with Alex. I don't suppose you ever heard of him?

Yeah what's next? Soon the tyrannical government will be telling us we can't run stop signs or drive 80 MPH around elementary schools.

Power hungry Nazis!
That is a stupid comparison.

Nobody would suggest that and it isn't anywhere near the same thing and you know it. On the contrary, why don't you support lowering the speed limit around elementary schools and everywhere else? That would save lives. Medicare for all would save even more lives.

The truth is you don't really want to save lives. You just pretend you do. If they die in car accidents you are okay with unnecessary deaths. If they die because their cancer was caught too late because they don't have health insurance you are okay with those unnecessary deaths as well.

Their lives don't matter as much to you as covid deaths.

wtf are you talking about

there are people on ventilators right now.
people are dying right now
the vast majority of them are unvaccinated
They could get vaccinated if they wanted to. They choose not to. That is their choice. What is wrong with that?

Do you want to save them from themselves by taking away their freedom?

yes, i want to also save their lives.

I mainly don't want them to take up space in the ICU and maybe endanger someone whose apendix burst and now doesn't have room. Or someone who can't get a vaccine for valid reasons who just got covid.

No, that is not what you want. How many 30 year olds get put in ICU with covid?

"I mainly don't want them to take up space in the ICU"

There is no longer any danger of that. Most people have already had covid or have gotten the vaccine. People who are afraid they might get it should self isolate. It isn't our responsibility to protect them. They need to protect themselves if they think they could be the less than 1% that could die from covid.

Medicare for all would save even more lives. Do you support that?

"There is no longer any danger of that."
reality disagrees

"Most people have already had covid or have gotten the vaccine"
Not enough and not properly distributed accross the globe. Also variants.

"People who are afraid they might get it should self isolate"
That's like saying we don't need to make efforts in keeping the streets safe, people who are afraid of getting murdered should self isolate
"It isn't our responsibility to protect them"
yes it is

"They need to protect themselves if they think they could be the less than 1% that could die from covid."
They are protecting themselves. And we will do what we can to help protect them

"Medicare for all would save even more lives. Do you support that?"
Yes. I do. They are not mutually exclusive.

What about lowering the speed limit? Do you support that to save lives?

How about doubling the fine for not wearing a seat belt? Do you support that to save lives?

Exactly. Who decides just exactly how much the govt tells us what the hell to do? Who decides that? Remembering that for each new law, more freedom is chipped away. I understand how a liberal person can be so free with giving up Freedom, as that is part of being a liberal, but I wonder it their true human nature might struggle a bit with that maxim.

We are doing that already. In certain areas we don't drive 50km/h like we usually do in cities, we drive 30 km/h. On highways we drive faster. How is this relevant in any way? Are you saying that if I believe everyone should get a vaccine i must support a 10km/h speed limit or be a hypocrite?

"How about doubling the fine for not wearing a seat belt? :"
Not double, no. That does nothing for people making more than a given amount per year. Fines should be based on income. Like when Bezos has to pay a parking fine, it should be like a billion.

Zahlanzi just said that a fine needs to based on income. Is this Marx? I think it most certainly is.
It is EXACTLY the same as his saying '....from each according to his ability." We now have 2 documented Marxists on the Forum.

Maybe we should ban speed "mandates" and force car manufacturers to stop engineering seat belts into their vehicles. Certainly we'd all have a lot more freedom. Right?
