Luckily nobody is burning books.
Not as sexy as burning books, but it is effective and not nearly as alarming.

@averagejoe1 saidFrom my point of view statues are like personal trophies.
Something to ponder , with all the stuff that is going on. An example, is tearing down the statues signifying the past. I am sure there are others. Go for it.
I have no use for trophies, and am not particularly impressed by statues.
I'll make an exception for things like coffee mugs that say Worlds Greatest Dad, but other than that I don't care if statues are put up or taken down.
Why should I care about some lifeless image?
Maybe I should put up a strawman image of myself on my front lawn. That way if a mindless reactionary wants to attack me he (or she) might only attack that image (thinking they are doing me harm).
Now that I think about it, something like this could also serve to scare away crows from invading a corn field. So if I mass produced these strawman images and sold them to farmers...
Ooooo, this could be a great money making opportunity!!!

@mghrn55 saidTaking down the pyramids has been threatened, believe it or not. And if the
When do the pyramids in Egypt start coming down ?
You know where this is going, right ?
hardcore Islamists take over, they will take them down, as they believe the
Pyramids to be some Pagan religious symbol.
Cooler heads prevailed, because Egypt's most needed industry is tourism.

@earl-of-trumps saidAs we are teetering on tremendous issues (the future), is it wise to expend thought and energy and assets into past problems, such as reparations for slavery 150 years ago? That is he crux of the title of this thread.....when I discovered it, I didn't even give one whit of thought to statues. I was thinking about reparations, and the stuff Suzianne calls whataboutisms. (previous, past occurrences ).

That is, if Biden wins, he will need a lot of money for some reason, and better to give it to him than to people who were not around 150 years ago. The future?...or, reparations? Churchill's quote is right on.

@AverageJoe1
So you figure 300 odd years of suppression has no effect on present generations.
Health data, cultural data, school data say otherwise.
Blacks are in the shape they are in BECAUSE of slavery, hundreds of years of it.
But that means nothing to you, SUCK IT UP would be your motto.
Which is just what whitey would say.
@averagejoe1 saidSo what you really want to do is forget the past, at least the parts you find inconvenient.

@no1marauder saidI'm with Churchill, myself. Y'all can wallow in it, we have a crisis in the making. Actually, I dont think y'all know ti is a crisis. Your candidate is so bad that sen Pelosi and Hillary are negative on him. But, true, he isn't the subject......but our future is, and he could be in charge of it.
So what you really want to do is forget the past, at least the parts you find inconvenient.

@no1marauder saidAll statues? No.
A statute doesn't "signify the past".
Should Germany have left up all statutes of Hitler? Iraq of Saddam?
Some statues? Maybe.
For instance, a massive statue in a high-profile part of town that is completely politically out of touch would not make sense.
But if it is a statue that was erected in his hometown, or in a park that actually has political significance and is not deemed to just be an enumeration of the statues, it may make sense to have it there. For instance, statues that are preserved in Predappio, Italy, make sense.
I honestly think it'd be really interesting to see actual Nazi/Ba'athist/Soviet monuments in person, yet, I imagine that there is only a lot of the latter that are preserved. Of course, we have to respect the will of the locals who want to erase the bulk of it, but preserving some of it is very sensible.
I really would love to go as a tourist to North Korea after the regime falls and to actually take in a lot of those massive monuments they've made. Of course, the bulk should be destroyed, but some should remain.

@sonhouse saidI quite disagree. Civil rights has been running for 60 years. A lot of time, and tho Obama did little for the blacks, which is their and his fault, they need to stick with Trump to attain what you allude to. These things take time, slanthead. Do you think it can be bought with Biden/Bernie/Government money????????????
@AverageJoe1

It happens with freedom and liberty, free enterprise, all that comes with it. You think Biden is good for that, or is Trump? You probably think that taking money from rich people and giving it to poor people will make everything right. Do you know there are JOKES about such concepts? It cannot happen, it is impossible.
Simple point. If you punitively tax a rich guy's company, he will suffer, so his laborer workers will suffer. They had asked him for employment, he gave it to them. (Suzianne would say he got rich on their backs or some such) Hey.....we aint talking about Mr rich guy. He can take his profits and go to Europe. We are talking about the people making their way in the world, one rung at a time.
Who else would employ them? Sorry, Think I will turn in. It is hopeless.

@lemon-lime saidSo - are you complaining about re-writing history?
The modernized version of book burning is the banning of books, and rewriting history in order to favor a particular bias.

An example in particular to discuss.
And what books have been banned recently?

If memory serves me, the Russians have taken down a statue of Stalin
