If people get their heads out of their collective assses, things can happen. Look at the Hudson River, you wouldn't have wanted the SPRAY to touch you much less drink the water but thanks to that leftwing nutter folk musician Pete Seeger and his boat the Clearwater, he singlehandedly started a movement that now is well on the way to cleaning up that dreadful river, where fish are actually returning. The same thing can happen to the whole planet too but not if we just refuse to see a problem and let the next couple hundred years go by ignoring the issue. The latest estimate of the cost shows it would be something like a quarter percent of the GNP. People spend more than that on TV guides.

They wouldn't THINK of actually having the city workers actually getting their hands dirty and removing all the floating tires and such. Too much like work.
So you hope that famous people will come and do the hard work for you? You are not going to change peoples belief systems when you sound like a crazy person. This singer showed people a problem and was able to get others to help.
