David, give up. You'd be better served talking to your nearest brick wall rather than trying to debate Stang, sorry i mean Sambo.

Waiting for another multi-hundred million dollar election campaign is not the answer.

Anyway, IMAGINE ...

... IF THE HUNDEREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT INVADING IRAQ, AND POSSIBLY IRAN, WERE SPENT ON RESEARCH INTO ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY INSTEAD ...

HOW DIFFERENT WOULD THE WORLD BE ?

America only spends $200M to $300M a year on research into alternative energy sources but has spent over $200,000,000,000 on its invasion of Iraq.

Well yes the world might be completely different and we all have an abundance of free energy and everything will be fine.

Now lets all line up and lambast Bush and his cronies for destroying the world.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

How much do other countries spend on researching alternative energy? Where does the US stand in relation to the other G8 in this respect?

You said that.

Heres an idea, why dont you start debate threads where there is perhaps scope for debate rather than are just one sided with obvious answers, of course if all the money spent on iraq had been spent on research into alternative energy it would be a good thing.

I've spent 5 minutes searching and could find nothing.

I would have thought that this would be something America would boast about.

That's OK. Sorry for repeating myself. I thought you ignored the comment but realised you were writing a post to a previous comment as I was writing one too.

The graphs show concerning trends regarding energy R&D spend across various nations, particularily America.

Wonderful thing the internet.

Page 49 para 3says that America Federal R&D Spending is 40% of the total world amount spent. This suggests that they are spending quite a large amount compared to other countries.

But America is the richest country on earth and it says that it's research spend has halved.

I agree that is an appalling drop; the US really needs to be educated about energy efficiency and weened off its reliance on oil.

However, its share of R&D costs is still much higher than its percentage of world GDP:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)

What also needs to be done is an effort to ensure that developing countries such as China and India, as they expand their infrastructure make sure they do so with Global Warming and energy efficiency in mind.

Thanks for the observations. However, the article also says ...

All governments engaged in energy RD&D (directly or indirectly) should as a
matter of urgency produce detailed energy RD&D expenditure data in local
currency, both in current prices and, at internationally agreed five-year
intervals, in constant prices. Differentiation should be made between spending
on basic and applied research, on development and commercialisation, and on
RD&D for conventional and advanced fossil fuel technologies. Carbon
sequestration, hydrogen and fuel cell RD&D spending should be identified.
Changes in definitions and their implications should be clearly stated as they
occur.
