They should make their stories known to the trio's lawyers and volunteer to testify for the defense at the trial. The Nation is hardly an impartial source; Bauer has written at least a dozen articles for them.

what fate do you think awaits villagers who testify against the Iranian govt, or who even inform the police that they have evidence that is contrary to the official story, especially in a case with foreign policy implications?

Originally posted by no1marauderi think they'd not get out alive, and given the porosity of the border, their families might not be safe either.

* no1m: "2 IRAQI KURD villagers who testified in Iranian court"
do you think Iran will be holding court in Iraq to satisfy the qualms of Iraqi villagers who might not want to cross the border into Iran to testify?
after all, they might not get out.
and if the villagers are correct, the border IS porous, especially to the Iranian govt.
and if the villagers aren't correct, why testify?
Originally posted by zeeblebotIt's a long article; could you cite to the part where it says that foreign witnesses who testify in high profile cases involving Americans are routinely killed if they testify in a way favorable to the defense?

Thanks for your research.
There's loads more to this episode that's yet to see the light of day. Quite simply the story does not compute.
These three people are not naïve teens who made an irrational decision by choosing Iraq / Iran border for a fun outing. No. No. No. These three are well into adulthood and still chose to trek afoot, unescorted into an area of conflict on the border of two countries which incidentally have no kind feelings for their home country.
Something is barmy about the entire affair.
*If I was an Iranian border guard and I found three ‘Americans’ in an isolated area at the border saying they were only out for a fun walk…… I would arrest them immediately also.
