This is a reasonable point, but I think that the Kurds have an opportunity. They are already in control of their autonomous region, Israel would be quite pleased to have a state in the region that doesn't want it destroyed, and the West want a stable cooperative regime which can provide secure oil fields and at least pays lip service to Western human rights and democratic standards.
