Israel is now in defiance not only of a number of General Assembly resolutions, but a Security Council resolution. What sanctions do you believe should be imposed? What measures should be taken?

Secondly, what does the US abstention really say? That they agree with the resolution, as Rice said after the vote? Why not vote in favour, then?

I gotta say, though, that I am amazed that there was no American veto.

"Israel in violation of security council resolution"

.... and so is Hamas.

These two facts shoud be mentioned, not just the fact that Israel is.

Sanctions are already being applied against Hamas.

So, what sanctions should be applied against the zionists?

Immediate, long-lasting. Hamas is a political party, not a terrorist organization. I disagree with some of its goals (ie the Islamization of Palestine) but Israel let its true colors show through.

I'm back. Back and ready for action. And Israel's immediate destruction.

Israel and it's Arab neighbors have been violating international law for decades, all they seem to do is shoot at each other. The Middle East sucks!😠

Exactly what kind of destruction do you speak of?

This does not seem to be a resolution calling for a unilateral ceasefire by Israel.

Israel and Hamas ignore UN call for cease-fire

Associated Press Writers Ibrahim Barzak And Jason Keyser, Associated Press Writers – 42 mins ago

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Israeli jets and ground troops hammered at Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip and Islamic militants fired barrages of rockets at southern Israeli cities Friday, ignoring a U.N. resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire after two weeks of combat.

The Israeli prime minister's office said the U.N. action was not practical, and senior Cabinet ministers decided to press on with the offensive. Israel will stop only when it succeeds in ending rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled territory, the government said.

Haha, they can't be serious. I think they mean: Isreal will only stop after the elections are over.

the point here was that security council resolutions against israel are not seen too often. every time someone defies these resolutions, sanctions are usually called for. why aren't they in this case?

also, it is true that the resolution calls on both sides to cease hostilities, but hamas already faces pretty severe sanctions. in fact, almost no one even talks to them (like the us or the eu).

and secondly, what was the point of the us abstention?

Does anyone really take the UN seriously? General Assembly, Security Council?

Their mandates are routinely ignored. GWB used UN resolutions as justification for invading Iraq. Then world opinion turned on a dime.

The UN and its predecessor the League of Nations are probably more responsible for more wars and killing than would ever have happened without them.

It was UN mandates that created the nation of Israel.
