@vivify saidYounger guys take their girlfriends out for dinner on Christmas Eve, but for most people it's an ordinary working day. It might be more to the point to say that it was a mean thing to do so soon before New Year - Oshogatsu is the really significant festival in the Japanese calendar.
They still celebrate Christmas, just like how we celebrate Halloween without any "profound importance" regarding dead saints.
