ACLU asks top US court to review law against boycotting Israel
A top civil rights group in the United States has asked the Supreme Court to review a lower court’s ruling that upheld an Arkansas state law penalising companies that boycott Israel.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a petition on Thursday asking the top court to take up the case, arguing the Appeals Court decision violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which protects the right to free speech.
In June, the appeals court ruled in favour of the law, saying boycotts fall under commercial activity, not “expressive conduct” guaranteed by the First Amendment.
The law follows similar measures passed by dozens of US states to curtail the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which pushes to pressure Israel through non-violent means to end abuses against Palestinians.

The "boycott Israel" movement has gained a lot of traction, including when Steven Hawking refused to attend a conference in Israel out of protest for their treatment of Palestinians.
Both Republican and Democratic leaders have enacted policies to stop advocates of this movement. The Republican-dominated Arkansas state legislature is one, but also Andrew Cuomo, who said "if you boycott Israel, New York will boycott you":

Republicans also introduced an "Anti-Israel Boycott" act, claiming the aim was to stop anti-Semitism; they claimed the movement was anti-Semitic:

Under this act, a "violation" may have been punished with by going to prison.
Two questions: is this a violation of free speech, and is it anti-Semitic? I think the answer is clearly "no" to being anti-Semitic and clearly "yes" to being a violation of free speech.
HHeHummmm. In my opinion,,
One does not need a rationale to justify why they want to boycott Israel. If they wish to boycott Israel
as a show of antisemitism, then so be it. Although, being fair here, the people that boycott Israel do so
because of Israel's complete mistreatment of the Palestinian people.
Not sure how "freedom of speech" enters into it, nor should it be needed.
EDIT TO ADD: I believe it to be unconstitutional for any state government to make such boycotts to Israel punishable by law.

22 states have passed laws or implemented executive orders that target BDS activism.
Dickinson, a city in Texas, posted an application for hurricane relief funds that mandated applicants to sign an agreement promising they will not boycott Israel. The city cited a Texas law that prohibits state agencies from contracting companies that boycott Israel.
How is this not getting more media attention? Such laws are quite frightening. What if this law is applied to the US government? The Montgomery bus boycotts would've been illegal under such a law and blacks having to give up seats to whites would've continued.
@earl-of-trumps saidThere is more than anti-semitism as reason to boycott Israel. It being a disgusting apartheid regime is a good one.

Office of Antiboycott Compliance (OAC)
The Office of Antiboycott Compliance (OAC) within BIS is charged with administering and enforcing the Anti-Boycott Act of 2018, Part II of the Export Control Reform Act of 2018 (ECRA), and the antiboycott provisions set forth in Part 760 of the Export Administration Regulations.
These authorities discourage, and in some circumstances, prohibit U.S. companies from taking certain actions in furtherance or support of a boycott maintained by a foreign country against a country friendly to the United States (unsanctioned foreign boycott). U.S. companies must report to OAC their receipt of certain boycott-related requests for information designed to verify compliance with an unsanctioned foreign boycott. Prohibited activities include, inter alia, agreements by U.S. companies to refuse to do business with a boycotted country. . .
U.S. companies should report their receipt of requests to engage in boycott-related activities or to otherwise further or support an unsanctioned foreign boycott. If you have questions, please call (202) 482-2381 and leave a message for the Duty Officer or contact OAC by email.
This is utter madness.
@vivify saidFree market sorts everything out. Not happy buying products from Israel, then don't do it. Not happy dealing with people that deal with Israel, then don't do that either. Same goes for Cuba.

Rosa Parks refuses to go to the back of the bus... that's racism!
@zahlanzi saidOh, I agree. But you know the routine,
There is more than anti-semitism as reason to boycott Israel. It being a disgusting apartheid regime is a good one.
Go to court and say you are boycotting Israel because of Israel's apartheid while Jews say it's because of your antisemitism,
Guess who's going to win that one.
@wajoma saidVery good up, @wajoma, free market.
