@no1marauder saidTHEY DO.
They should pay taxes at the graduated rates everyone else does at that level of income.
You don't really think they just get handed 1.2 billion dollars, do you?

@jj-adams saidThen no one would buy the tickets if the reward were reduced downwards. It's a catch 22.
$1.2 billion is ridiculous for a single person.
They need to restructure the system so that awards that big are split between 1200 people.
1200 millionaires versus one sick insanely rich person.
But for us to say that that is an inordinate amount of money for one person, then you give the really liberal libs free rein to go after a man worth $200B+ , who is Musk. Would you really like for the govt to hunt people down like that??

@averagejoe1 saidThen what is it about?
This post is not about taxes. We stipulate that everyone earns money legally and pays the required taxes.

One ticket was sold in Illinois which brought $1.2 billion. Yesterday.
Winner not yet identified. (outed, in lib-speak).
the lottery winners. Can you imagine the sales
calls, and the charities soliciting every big money winner?
@averagejoe1 saidLottery winners ARE TAXED substantially.
So you apparently agree that he is entitled to the money.
Please…The question is then, how do you square your allowing his retaining the billion to not allowing rich people to keep their riches?
That is the simple question. Hopefully Sonhouse will not respond.
So, what say you?

@AverageJoe1
What say you if YOU were the winner? Sounds like pure jealousy to me. What happened, you bought a thousand tickets and didn't win a penny?
Personally, I don't buy lottery tickets, I would rather just set fire to a hundred dollar bill and watch it burn but of course the lottery addicts just say well if you don't buy a ticket you can't win. Sure, spend a thousand bucks on tickets when there is a one in 500 million of winning. That brings it down to one chance in a HALF million.
Stupid concept to me.

In the USA? Of course!
@jimm619 saidlottery winnings in Canada are not taxed in any way whatsoever.
Well, it's all paid for.
Like , 'Buy one, get one free,' or 'Free delivery.'
It's all figured in, even most dolts know that.
The ticket sales lose a lot to the government, i think, but the winners pay nothing.

@shallow-blue saidWe got laws about it.....

seem unenforced, and unenforceable........
Many of these calls are from Eastern Europe
and, of course, Mother Russia.
