@zahlanzi saidStep 1: Outbid millennials on housing.

When the revolution comes, remember this guy. Add him to the list
Step 2: Rent that housing for as much as the market will bear to millennials who can't afford to own a home because you bought them all.
Step 3: Tell everyone millennials actually prefer this situation.
Step 4: Profit.
... the only step he's missing (probably because he's not based in the US) is convincing politicians to use the tax paying millennials hard earned income to front the money for the whole scheme.
@zahlanzi saidStrange is it not, you see the problem as to many greedy landlords, I see it as not enough landlords. The ethics of some is another debate for another day.

In Australia and NZ rents are going through the roof, insanely so, why, because landlords are being squeezed out by the victim lovers. Oh those poor tenants, lets make it better for them and much harder for the landlords, that will fix it. NO IT WILL NOT. It makes it worse. There are so, so many that do not want the stress involved of actually owning a house, Don't want it. Renting is so much easier. No maintenance, no wondering why the mold is growing in the corner, the roof looks tired, the trees are overgrown, etc etc etc. Every time the victim lovers try to fix the problem, it gets worse.
In NZ they introduced minimum standards for rentals, sounds good, yeah, many landlords left the game and the others where forced to spend heaps then simply increased rents to recoup the costs involved.
Stop with the idiotic blaming the landlords, to simplistic, to stupid.

@jimmac saidI think you read this post a bit too simplistically. We, as a society, need the cost of housing to be affordable for the average working man.

Landlords, with all their financial and political power, dont necessarily have the best interests of society at the forefront of their decision making.

Don’t see that much any more.

@shavixmir saidPity?, Not from me, thats for the victim worshipers to latch onto, if they could get their heads around it of course, not me.
Ah, the feel pity for scum landlords angle.

I wish them luck as we need landlords, at least poor people do, but I do not see any reason to pity them, A puzzle you should think that.
I do pity, somewhat, the poor tenants for all the harm that the well intentioned, naive, victim lovers have imposted on them. In NZ a landlord "must" maintain a house at a much, much higher level than a homeowner may choose to.
What the blazes does one "expect" will happen to the cheap rentals, wooosh gone.

@shavixmir saidI might add, I have no time for "scum" landlords.

Without them, people can afford to buy their own home. You think it's society making life hard for the landlord. Okay, fine, then buy one home and live in it. Then maybe there will be more homes for everyone to buy their own and invest in it. That is how it should be. Landlords are a blight, not a necessity.
@suzianne saidYou are missing some major points, mainly, there is a large number of people that do not want, nor can handle the responsibilities and obligations that are tied to home ownership. Without landlords these people are stuffed.
You focus on the landlords.

That would be a nice thing we both can agree on, but we may disagree about the means. I do not pretend to even know how to start fixing the problem.

Couple of assumptions here, I know a number of landlords but I know zero that have any financial or political power.

I don't see it as such, you do because you didn't understand my post. And rather than asking me what i mean (like a normal person) you jumped straight to conclusions and, at the end, outright insults
"I see it as not enough landlords"
By all means i see it too. There aren't enough landlords. There should be more. How do you achieve that.
"In Australia and NZ rents are going through the roof, insanely so, why, because landlords are being squeezed out by the victim lovers"
Doesn't follow. If they are "squeezed", prices should be going down
"Oh those poor tenants, lets make it better for them and much harder for the landlords, that will fix it"
Depends what that "make it better for the tenants is". Without you giving examples I can't form an opinion though allow me to stay on the side of the powerless for a bit longer.
You turned this discussion into a talk about tenant and landlord rights.
if you had read the OP, like at all, you would have realized it's about real estate moguls (the few) gobbling up all properties thus driving up the price, then renting it (or selling at an exhorbitant rate) at a high rate because the price of homes are high everyone is forced to rent. It's about unregulated capitalism, not about the landlords owning a home or two that they rent out
. "There are so, so many that do not want the stress involved of actually owning a house, Don't want it. Renting is so much easier"
This affects them too. if these moguls drive up the prices of homes for sale obviously it will drive up the rents as well. If you can't afford to buy a home and you HAVE to rent or be homeless, they will be able to set it high.
"No maintenance, no wondering why the mold is growing in the corner, the roof looks tired, the trees are overgrown, etc etc etc"
you just complained that there are minimum standards for landlords. you now want minimum standards after all? Fixin the tired roof is a minimum standard
@averagejoe1 saidSo you came to tell us you are ignorant and proud of it, understand no concept beyond some simple talking points like capitalism good everything else socialism therefore bad and you cannot be bothered to question what repercussions can come from something.
Believe me when I say I was not drawn to this thread, I have read nothing, because a person's ownerships, investments, etc are of no concern to me. Go for it, Mr 30,000. I love this country.
What a wonderful way to go through life
Edit: I look forward to you telling us again young people are lazy and eat too much avocado toast and that's why they can't aford a home (average price is 500k $ now).
