Then I'd return home with a pile of cash to leverage my way up at home. That's the expatriate dream; is it a worthy one?
Just read your contract carefully.

My capitalist pig side tells me go for it because the world won't change, and nobody will look after you but yourself, so take the money and run.

I was considering moving to Dubai for bit -- make some extra money, pay off that bond ... but the place seems really nasty under the surface -- slave labour, racism -- as detailed in this article:

Should I care?
Originally posted by WheelyI pretty much already know what it'd be like. A lot of people I know have been there. Plenty of anecdotal evidence for exploitation of workers. So it's the ethical aspect that concerns me.

Not everywhere is perfect, but the 2 weeks I spent over their make be believe my brother who after 2 years living their proclaims it the greatest city in the world! Pretty much zero crime, zero drugs and when I lost my wallet in a bar I was shocked to have the barman hand it back to me...with the money it it...that would happen nowhere else in the world!
Originally posted by JamesqtI believe that would happen in many if not most countries around the world. It´s happened to me and I have also handed in a couple with money in.

The post that was quoted here has been removedI live in Cape Town -- and I use public transport! --; my stomach's pretty strong.
In Dubai I'd see much less poverty. I might forget that it exists! Would that be good for my survival instincts?
I see Dubai and Sandton as being advanced exponents of insulated modular living for professionals. Tint your car windows and you won't even notice the beggars at your gate! (Thankfully for security-conscious Sandtonites, bullet-proof windscreens are now available).
