Man, this guy must WANT a Republican in the White House! He's said some boneheaded things, but that quote out of Oregon today? That sealed it. He announced that the rest of the world was not going to just "keep saying it's okay" for us (Americans) to drive our SUV's, eat all we want, and keep our thermostats set at 72 all the time.
1. Just who does ...[text shortened]... effete elitist in this jerk. Once again, the party "of the people" has feet of clay.
Puke.😞

All Obama was saying was that the U.S.A.'s addiction to SUVs and thermostats set at 72 has an impact on the U.S.A.'s relationship with the rest of world. Would he have been a responsible (possible) leader-in-waiting if he had not brought it up?
I am sure when you are looking for new leadership in Ottawa, your going to look to the USA for our opinion, right? When you are ready to step out of our shadow, please feel free.

do they have aircraft carriers?
So any other country with aircraft carriers (and, let's say, nuclear weapons) is similarly not beholden to the rest of the world, the opinions of the EU, UN ... and the US?

Well we (the rest of the world) are starting to get more power and influence internationally and if we don't like what we see in the US we might do something about it. You may not care, but it will affect you wither you like it or not.
Unless we turn into the bad guys and start taking resources by force from other nations (which I find ridiculous),[ een.
You will change your tune when the Chinese have the upper hand (which they will soon).
Please elaborate about how the US is getting oil from Iraq (besides paying for it).

The fact that much of the worlds economy is centered around the US and the US dollar enables the US to force unfair trade agreements on other countries.

Also many African countries were persuaded (by various means including bribery) to take massive loans from First world monetary institutions at exorbitant interest rates. They have been paying for it ever since. When I worked in Zambia, about half my income tax was going directly to pay off loans taken out before I was born.

How much oil were they getting before attacking and conquering it? How much of the money they are 'paying for it' is actually staying in Iraq and not going to US companies?
Originally posted by AThousandYoungI believe "economic strong arming" essentially amounts to what is called "market power" in economics. It means that agent/player in the market is so large that they can influence the price with their individual decisions.

Alternatively, he could be saying that the US uses it's power in arenas outside of a specific market to influence that market's price. Basically, we distort the optimal production decision in a competitive market (marg. benefit = marg. cost) by influencing the either the marg. benefit or marg. cost with factors external to the market itself.
BTW I'm not claiming that we, the US, do any of this specifically, although we almost certainly do. Generally, a large market player will. It's game theory.

when we cut and paste stuff for you.. you whine and bee itch, find the link yourself
Originally posted by no1marauder"PF" has a perfect eidetic memory, so he didn't screw anything up. I heard the man's speech--there IS no "link". I don't require such a tedious device to get my info. Since the speech, Obama has been sound-bited ad nauseum on the news channels, especially the parts I mentioned (setting of thermostats @ 72 + driving SUVs + eating all we want = other countries not sitting back and saying okay, fine with us, any longer.---paraphrased). And anyone who's heard it knows he said EXACTLY what I said he did. You wanna source? Here ya go, sonny--my source was Obama;s mouth to my ear. "Link" 'til your sweet little pea-pickin' heart desires. 😀
