It seems like a terrible idea. Why would the whole world think the same way on all issues? Taxation, religious freedoms, death penalty, abortion. It's tough enough to come to a resolution in one country now certain countires should impose their moral views on other or be burdened to economically support others.

Again, look at the US: the entire country obviously doesn't think the same way on any of the issues you brought up. Each state has their own laws and ways of doing things, right? Yet it's still one country under one government.

The same could apply to an actual United Nations government.

How will you know which laws work best and which don't if each state doesn't have their own laws and ways of doing things?

I keep thinking about that old Star Trek episode "Space Seed" with Khan. Remember what Spock said in response to that idea?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0708447/

The whole world under one whip. That is what Spock said.

You would probably get institutionalized economic slavery. Who would stop them? How would people be able to tell they could be doing better. There ...[text shortened]... e the world? That is essentially what would happen. People do not get that much power by being nice.
"You would probably get institutionalized economic slavery."
Yeh, not at all like we already have now

"Who would stop them? "
Like the US "stops" economic slavery now?

"There would be nothing else to compare your standard of living to except the other people under the same whip. "
So an american wouldn't know what his standard of living is unless there is a canadian to compare themselves to?

"People who want to dominate the world are not ethical people."
Who said anything about dominating the world?

"They don't have other people's interests at heart. They use people as pawns and sacrifice their lives for their own selfish interests. Unless you serve their interests they don't care about you. "
Yeah, unlike what we have today, right?

"Would you let an organized crime syndicate rule the world?"
No? Then again, we wouldn't let an organized crime syndicate rule a country either. What are you babbling about?

foibles shared by humankind.........greed, family feuds, etc, etc

Everything you pointed out that is happening now would get far worse. That is my point.

You cannot trust them. They will exploit you on a level you have never seen before. As bad as Russia can be you should be rooting for them. We need the competition. Without competition there is no incentive to become better.

Its just not clear to me how it actually works even in theory. For example I live in the United States, we already spend our tax payers dollars to protect the world. I believe other country should chip in a lot more than they do and would not want to spend more money on others. Other countries are poorer the think we should use our money to raise their standard of living and that we should consume less. That's a deal breaker, right?

My vote would go to highly ethical and empathic aliens, where they go, you know, nukes are not toys, so we are plucking them ALL out of your reach and the same for chemical and bio weapons.

We will also stop the dictators running wild, we will see to it only empaths get to be leaders.

The goal of these benevolent aliens would be like a galactic intervention with the idea a few generations down the line the world situation has calmed down and it is obvious even to would be dictators peace and normal commerce is much better than dictators and war and the aliens tell the world, you got it now, we will come back sometime in the future to check you all out, see how things are going then.
We fixed your raging climate, the CO2 levels are back below human times,
there is plenty of food now that we straigtened out the food chain so good luck humans!

What is the point of going to a different place if the world has one government?

Putin is not a dictator. Russia is a democracy.
The war in Ukraine is increasing carbon emissions. If you are serious about stopping it support ending the war.

Of course it’s possible.
Parts of society are already based along those sorts of lines: United Nations, European Union, etc.

There are treaties and declarations.
A declaration states intent, treaties are binding (so national law is lower).

Basically, a world government would just add an extra tier (or echelon) to the political system.
So, you’d have, in the Netherl ...[text shortened]... ady been used in international court cases (for example: Milieudefensie et al v Royal Dutch Shell ).
The UN and EU are opt-in organization. There are limitations when you are including countries that don't want to participate.

When people talk about a one world government it's usually in a sinister context, like a globe dominated by some villain, or in an apocalyptic Biblical sense where Satan rules.

But could a one world government actually be beneficial? Imagine a world that doesn't need nukes because it's all one country, and the world votes for a president/PM/Council, etc. Anyone can emig ...[text shortened]... nment be a good idea? Or is that just far too much power for any person or entity to ever be given?
Impossible if for no other reason than pooling different cultures. Wouldn’t be many happy campers.

Sure, plenty where it causes strife too.
Religion has probably caused more wars
and death than any other cause in the history of mankind.
It still goes on.
