Why did after-the-border enforcement go down? That's easily explained. Trump didn't care about immigration. What he cared about was stirring up the voter base. Ramping up bureaucratic inspections of green cards at construction sites and fruit orchards and packing plants doesn't get people excited. Building a wall to stop an 'invasion' does.
I can only say that it was better (Yes, not perfect) before Biden dismantled it.

And, hey, it is an 'invasion'. Look it up.

But how did he fool so many people into thinking he cared? Surely they have seen the numbers showing the decreased illegal immigration enforcement in the Trump administration? They were very successful at bogging down the system in ways that limited legal immigration, but not very successful at deporting those who are already here illegally.

I don't get it. How do they still think he was a staunch defender of illegal immigration when it's so clear he wasn't?

Right. It's not that the definition of an 'open border' is debatable, it's that the definition does not matter.

How did he fool so many people into thinking he was fighting for the little guy? How did he fool so many people into believing he won the election? He’s a consummate liar who tells people what they want to hear. “I’m too big to fail.” That’s been his schtick all along.
