@mott-the-hoople saidVideo of cop approaching Floyd. Floyd starts screaming and talking a mile-a-minute....screaming at cop, a common response in these situations. Granted, the cop's gun was a little much.
“ Combative? If they hadn't got physical with gun etc, he wouldn't have had anything to be combative against.”
Who are you referring to here?
Anyway, when all that banter gets started, why can't a cop NOT scream back, F-word, the whole works, and just cool it? Just back up, assess the situation. Figure,,,,how much time have I got? Well, he has all day. So let the 'perpetrator ' go wild and then when it settles down, then have a nice chat. No gun. I wish teachers would teach kids in grade school to listen to a cop who accosts them, and do what the cop says. SO simple.
@mott-the-hoople saidTaser them, step back to safe space and consider their options, like do I actually need to arrest this person even if it means killing them because of an outstanding fine or a traffic violation.
what should a cop do when the high on drugs subject becomes combative?
Oh yeah make sure they understand that the throat is a very important airway and it’s not to be knelt on, or get to know the difference between a taser and a handgun. Just basic stuff really.

@earl-of-trumps saidhow much time do you think it takes a criminal to pull a trigger? may not be enough time to do any switching
I'd like to see them develop a police gun that is *by default* set to taze, and if you want, can by switched over to shoot lead.

@averagejoe1 saidwhat if the perp is content to stay there forever? what if someone offers the perp food/water, will that be a crime?

@kevcvs57 saidso if a person has warrants for felonies, the cops should not take them into custody if the person resists?

And chauvin did not go by dept policy ...you are painting with a very wide brush concerning police officers, to the point of racism
@mott-the-hoople saidLike I said, a cooling-off period is better than an all-out assault by SWAT at Ruby Ridge or dragging a person who is running his mouth out of a car. Just stare at him, get a donut, consider why you are even there (an outdated license plate!). Consider the quietest way to resolve the situation.
what if the perp is content to stay there forever? what if someone offers the perp food/water, will that be a crime?
No one offers him a dam thing. A word from the cop, you are under arrest, puts the guy in police custody no matter where he is sitting. Let him sit, it will cool off. If not, break a rear window and put a dog in there. I just dont understand cops losing their cool and getting physical, touching the perp. Don't touch. What if he spits! Are you trying to get me started!?!?

@mott-the-hoople saidThis post says "should they take him into custody 'if he resists'. " They should take him into custody whether he resists, or doesn't resist. Common sense. So, dont get you there.

My thoughts here are not in the light of racism. Don't get you there, either. And I am not writing 'about Chauvin'. I am writing about a better way to settle these fellas down that don't seem to understand, that, when an officer approaches them, they put their hands on the wheel and look quizzically at the officer, waiting to see what the problem is. They have seen enough TV shows to know that is what to do.
I always get a kick on those shows where a suspect is in that situation, and says "I didn't do anything", thinking that Oh, the police will say "OK,, we believe you, goodbye."

@AverageJoe1
As to giving water, I expect that if a bystander gives him water While He Is In Custody, that they are ......what....obstructing justice,,??? Something, I expect.

@mott-the-hoople saidWhy do you think other advanced country's police kill far less civilians per capita? https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2020/06/05/policekillings/
My post was to kev, not you.
In 2019, US police killed 1099 individuals; England and Wales (with about 1/6 the population), killed 3.
@mott-the-hoople saidNot at all -- he potentially saved the life of the girl that was being attacked with the knife.
question for all you reformers...was the cop wrong here?
