According to the General who runs Russia’s Central military district the idea would be to push through to Odesa with support from Transnistria and then ‘consider’ moving on the ‘unfriendly’ government of Moldova.

They would be better letting Mariupol go if the price is dragging Transnistria and possibly Moldova into the war but they should certainly beef up their military on the transnistrian side of Odesa because I’m sure Russia will not pass up the opportunity to attack that port from both sides when they are ready.
My point, however, was that what we have here is again contradicting information. Russia claims that Ukraine attacked in Transnistria, while Ukraine claims that it was Russia who did it. Ukraine claims that Russia wants to use Transnistria to attack Odessa from both sides, while Russia quotes one psychologically unstable Ukrainian military correspondent who propagates Ukraine should take the weapons from the large weapons deposit in Transnistria, only 2 km away from the Ukrainian border.
As that weapons warehouse exists in reality, I cannot exclude that it is Ukraine that tries to escalate the war to Moldavia.

Do they not have the means to reinforce their garrison there?

The ammunition depot is probably the reason why there are provocations in Transnistria.
Besides, Russia has no border with Moldova. Russia cannot mass soldiers on the Moldova border as the unoccupied part of Ukraine is between Russia and Moldova.
