ok.

I'm tired of trying to "induce" a discussion.

I thought this would be a good break from "religion" and "god".

Sorry. I was wrong. You bunch are just not up to it.

No imagination. No wit. No thought process. Dead. Dumb.

Oh well.

So I will now tell you what I hoped to discuss. What I wanted you to think about.

Mystery...

We all crave to believe in a mystery.

Superstition.

We all want it.

Don't tell me you didn't "feel' it. When I told you a whole bunch of crap that couldn't happen. You did. I have your PM's to prove it.

Why?

Do we need it? The mystery?

Think about this in the context of the origin of religion.

Period.

Nuff' said.

if your using these stories to try to imply that basically religion has everything to do with our need to find something to fill a void in our lives, to find meaning to it, as in an afterlife, or using superstitions mixed in with religion to make us feel safer from death..... then your absolutely right

Want to rate them as per my request?

You are a brave soul if you do.

See my notice that "it might be a good time to study superstitions".

I have a theory.

Based on the number of people who actually believe all this stuff and want to "engratiate" themselves to me. grin.

Anyway. You did break the taboo. Let's see if anyone else responds.
One of the funniest things I heard about superstitions was from my friends who has a catholic wife who is very superstitous. My friend is atheist and a bit of a practical joker. When their first childs was starting to walk & speak he taught the little girl a new word unbeknown to his wife. Now picture this a room full of superstitious catholics at a party , all cooing around this cute little toddler. The tot starts to walk toward them, in as staggering way, arms out stretched, then the same time muttering & slurring the word "satan". 🙂

There is no way to really say what reality is, sometimes while in a contemplative mood i will just stare at an object (could be anything) and it won't feel real, as if it has no reason to be there.

I even wonder why i'm me, if that makes any sense, why not somebody else? why is my consiousnessis bound to this body? are my experiences the same as anybody else's. Is there anyway for me to prove that all this 'reality' isn't just in my head and none of you exist outside of it.

There is so much we will never understand, like why somethings only happen to some people or why is there even a reality for us to try and comprehend.

it all seems pointless yet its all a bit strange

There are two sides to so-called reality. One is relative - the ways things appear. The other is absolute - the way things are. These two facets are not separate. Since our own experience of relative reality is filtered through our perceptions, likes, dislikes, and so forth, it is highly unreliable and the cause of much wrongdoing. To know the nature of reality one cannot look outside one's mind for an answer as the mind is the ground of our experience.

Look inward diligently.

Reality is a myth created by Socrates.
Reality is composed of shadows cast by puppets that you cannot see.
Reality means to stand in the light while others remain in darkness.

Once you have perceived reality, you feel the obligation to rescue those remaining in darkness. They will resist you, and consider you mad. But, having once lived in the darkness they inhabit, and having found, or been shown the way out, you will persist. Therefore, you become a missionary--a purveyor of myth.

Reality can only be perceived in a work of fiction, for it truly is a novel concept.
Reality, always subjective, only becomes credible when shared with at least one other person; but, when it becomes universal, it has crossed over to the realm of illusion.
Reality is the cruel fate of those who no longer play games.

The "really real" is simultaneously a pleonasm and an oxymoron.

For a simple solution SVW, you aint used it all up yet.

As far as your thinking about things happening and then they become reality.....Happens all the time to me. You get used to it after some time. But it is not good to talk about it. People will think you wierd.
There are quite a few people in the world that believe that just because it does not happen to them it cannot be so.

Mystery

More than likely we are conditioned from an early age to believe in mystery. The tooth fairy, santa, ghosts, spirits, dragons, god etc.... Every year I wrestle with myself about the old santa gag, is it morally right to lie to your children so that they believe in something that is 100% false?

Superstitions

I think there are two kinds, one is based on something practical, e.g. Like it being unlucky to walk under a ladder. Which is obviously dangerous from a health & safety point of view.

The other is something illogical, like it being lucky to carry around a rabbits foot. Once you step outside the circle of superstition you can see that they are just another method of calming fears, or other emotions. The main problem is that they can feed themself, e.g. E-mail chain letters where you are doomed with bad luck if you don't send them on to 30 of your friends.

In the context of religion, superstitions were/are used to recruit and influence people through their fears.
