Out of curiosity following howardgee's threads, it occurred to me there might have been some studies on the relationship between suicide and intelligence. For these purposes, I'm not interested in the method of suicide.
It seems the jury is out on this one and that different studies have come up with contradictory results. Here are links to a couple of articles - the Boston one is the most interesting as it covers several different studies and the discrepancies between them.

Any thoughts on this? Does IQ have any relationship to suicidal tendencies?

Does that matter? Would it need to be a perfect measure of intelligence for the correlation between the two to exist?
And there's arguments around about whether IQ tests actually do test anything useful - so I think it does matter.
Stephen Jay Gould write a nice book reviewing the history of IQ tests and analysing their effectiveness or otherwise - The mismeasure of man.

I posted this in the "racism or logic" thread, reposting it here because it's partly related:
Here's a Finnish study about suicide mortality in mental retardation: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11328246&dopt=Abstract
"RESULTS: Women with MR had an equal suicide risk to Finnish women in general, while men had only one-third of the population risk."

Originally posted by orfeoI think there's a clear relationship between IQ, EQ and suicide. The dumber you are, the less you know, the happier you'll be. The lower your EQ, the less you care, the happier you are. High EQ and IQ often equals depression in the world as it is today.

Needless to say, I have an extremely high IQ and EQ. 🙁

How many did commit suicide? Are the numbers enough to allow a significant split between male and female and still have a representative sample for extrapolation? I doubt it.
Besides, there's no reason why a correlation in MR would be evidence of a correlation in highly intelligent people (for what that means).
I believe there is a fine line between genius and madness.
I am not a genius, however I share a trait with them; I think too much.
This can lead to depression occasionaly, thus suicide. I have experienced these impulses and I can say, with no statistical data to back me up; that yes there MUST be a correlation between the two.
People with low intelligence arn't usually smart enough to become depressed!
Again plz forgive my poor spelling and grammer.

I am not a genius...
Did I already say that?
Anyway, if you have a high IQ and a high EQ, that's when it gets troublesome.

My I.Q is 138
142 is perhaps genius.
So with your "well dah" comment you excluded me from genius ranks based upon what evidence?
You included yourself as a genius becaus your I.Q is a phenomonal ... what?
E.Q Do you mean emotional intelligence quota?
IMO there is no measurement for sanity.
edit: still poor speller....

What can I say? I'm one of evolution's most incredible accomplishments. Being this intelligent, and having this highly developed emotional skill, I can pretty much read you like a book. It's like a picture book in your case. 😛

Did a Nation wide (N.Z) maths and science test then I was eleven. Scored in the top one percent.
Recently completed mensa I.Q test, scored 138...
But like you said, EQ!
I think you're the same as me; we both neutralise our emotions, so it's difficult to factor this in.
I believe if we didn't do this, we would both be raving fuggen lunitics.
I LIKE being centered.
I think you do too.
