My personal opinion of the North Vietnamese Viet Minh and their South Vietnamese counterparts the Viet Cong had good goals and generally good methods, although I feel that despite their good treatment of the French invaders, they kinda ... overreacted against the American involvement. I'm not saying the US army didn't commit atrocities in Vietnam (as did the Viet Cong), but I think that if Truman were more receptive to the goals of Ho Chi Minh and his ideals, a protracted, pointless war could have been avoided, and Vietnam could have been liberated sooner.

Why not begin with the U.S. invasion of Vietnam and a little background material on its puppet dictatorships in "South Vietnam"?

I'd begin by reading "The quiet American".

First, realize that the Vietnamese struggle was modeled after the American struggle of 1775 onwards.

The American involvement in that conflict creeps me out.

I was in the US Navy in 1973 and had a friend who was on a ship whose duty was to protect Texaco while they were drilling for oil off the Vietnamese coast. That said it all to me.

Yeah we got a lot of oil off the coast of Viet Nam. Lotta deep water oil rigs were placed out there.

Please. They were drilling in 1973? That's when they pulled the troops out. Sort of late in the day to start drilling for oil and then claim that's why we were there.

Who in Vietnam benefitted from U.S. interests drilling for oil in Vietnamese waters?

I met him at Disbursing "A" school in San Diego but he had been in the Navy for at least 3 years, so it was earlier.

The puppets we propped up as "leaders" of South Vietnam.

Mmm. 1973, eh? So, two years or so later, that money was probably 'repatriated' to the U.S. Perhaps it was on that last helicopter.

Or maybe it was invested in preventative health care or rural infrastructure for the South's poor?

You think that the US dept. of war listens to logic?
