Americans who consider themselves conservatives now outnumber Americans who consider themselves liberal by almost two to one, according to a new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News.
In the poll of 1,001 adults conducted between July 15-18, respondents were asked: "Would you say your views on most political matters are liberal, moderate, or conservative?"
Thirty-eight percent said they were conservative, while only 20% said they were liberal. Thirty-nine percent, meanwhile, said they were moderate.
The percentage of self-described conservatives has increased since President Barack Obama was inaugurated in January and the percentage of self-described liberals has diminished. A Washington Post poll conducted in mid-January, shortly before the inauguration, showed 32% saying they were conservative, 24% saying they were liberal and 42% saying they were moderates.

Of course, by "liberals" and "conservatives" the study only means the more extreme versions of the two. You're not mentioning the moderate third of the populace. No, two thirds of Americans are not claiming to be conservative, folks.

A LOT of people consider themselves moderate since they hold varying views on varying issues (in others words, parties don't think for everyone).
I consider myself moderate on many things, but fiscally conservative andliberal on immigration.
Consistently for freedom from government interfearance in people's lives, movement, and wealth.

North Americans were born conservative and will die conservative. Even the so called U.S. liberals are way, way to the right of the spectrum compared to liberals in other parts of the world.
So don't worry, utherpendragon, there's no risk of the U.S. being even close to a liberal and progressive society not even in the next 50 years 🙂

To lean to the left is to subvert traditional social structures and move towards egalitarianism. Moreover, since the true left tends to recognize new social movements as propellers of change, an open space for radical democratic groups is paramount.
This is not happening in the U.S., where the traditional structures continue to exercise its power. Don't be fooled by cosmetic issues. The U.S. left has never (I repeat: never) been close to organize a serious political attempt at power, and its struggle (and achievements) have been launched from grassroots level.
Check Chantal Mouffle's essay in Trend's "Radical Democracy". By the way, Mouffle is the co-author of "Hegemony and Socialist Strategy" together with Laclau. I presume you've read them, right?
