Can I throw something out there for you folks to chew on? Have you ever wondered why sports like Soccer (football), Rugby, Hockey (in the South and Northwest), and others are not appreciated or followed by Americans? Or why things like football, basketball, college sports and (moronic) nascar racing are so big? I can only provide one explanation and that ...[text shortened]... rect, if anyone can give me a better answer and back it up with facts I would love to hear it...

Just a side-bar here. You friggin American haters out there can't seem to discuss any subject without resorting to slurs against my country. Why don't you just keep your infantile crap to yourselves. If you want to discuss a subject there's no need to resort to the old childish game of sticks-and-stones. It's amazing to me that many of the people who seem to scream the loudest about Bush picking a fight in Iraq are the same ones who constantly want to pick a fight with Americans.
Originally posted by darvlayIf you live in a small country, internal competion in sport is limited. We play rugby - and we can field a dozen first class teams. To provide more games we play a few other countries with the same passion for this game.
I think it's that plan and simple - Americans don't like watching non-Americans in sports. And a lot of sport-junky Americans don't like seeing their own lose so why would they tune in to the World Cup (Soccer or Hockey), F1 racing or something along those lines?
It's following the concept of the simplest answer is probably the most correct, if anyone can give me a better answer and back it up with facts I would love to hear it...
If our country was a hundred times bigger, we would have a corresponding larger number of players. And we would probaby not bother sending teams half way across the world.
Small countries are always more outer focussed - in travel, export and sport. Opportunities are limited. and you have no choice.
A better comparsion is to compare sports within the US to sports played inside Europe - similar size, similar population. Most Europeans compete only within this area.

And I can say whatever I want about whomever I want because that's the American way!

But Hockey is my favourite sport so I guess that leaves us free to disagree.

Originally posted by chancremechanicThe main difference between NASCAR and Formula 1 (another example of the (North) Americans having their own version of things) seems to be that Formula 1 cars don't go round and round a blooming oval. Both are pretty boring though - there are far better motor sports out there in terms of competitiveness and excitement.

2. The south doesn't appreciate Hockey? Well Dallas won the Cup 4 years ago and correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Tampa Bay (South) win the cup against an Canadian team last year? Why are all the teams in Canada leaving if Canadians support them so much?
3. Last time I checked NASCAR has a strong following in Canada.
4. College sports? I for one enjoy college football and basketball because the players for the most part play for the enjoyment of the game and not for the money.
5. I guess Canadians just watch Hockey and nothing else because they are so good at it right? Kind of a ludicrous statement on my part correct? Much like your statement concerning the viewing habits of Americans if I may say so myself.
Originally posted by chancremechanicHave to disagree on the Hockey statement. Great game and it sucks that there won't be a season due to spoiled players and owners.

If you are talking boring sports then you have to look no further than Baseba..........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Sorry I nodded off then.

I don't think it's a matter of soccer being boring as much as it is the United States having a passion for other sports. You can only be passionate about so many sports. In the U.S., we choose to follow five (Hockey, Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Oval Motorsports.)
But Ian (um, conveniently? 🙄) forgets to point out that the best players in the soccer world come from Europe and South America. Interesting how it's so rabidly followed in those countires? And that is why those countries follow that sport to the point of violence.
Does soccer need national success to continue to grow? Yes, I would agree with that. The U.S. performance in the World Cup got quite a bit of attention last time considering that watching the matches was nearly impossible due to the time of the events (overnight.) Soccer is growing in this country, but capturing a market isn't done overnight.
Now back to Ian's hatred of Americans......
