Originally posted by WulebgrYour father's Air Force, and the military in general, is vastly different today, with due respect to your dad-thank him for serving on my behalf, please. What YOU should have said was: "The view Kerry expressed has been around a long time, and is shared by many that DO NOT understand military life".
My Dad is a life long Republican and served 20 years in the US Air Force. When my brothers and I were teenagers, he told us that we should join the military only if we failed at everything else. The view Kerry expressed has been around a long time, and is shared by many that understand military life.
I hit my younger brother in the head with a hammer when he was four. He served in Iraq.
Today's men and women in America's armed forces are educated at the rate of 99% having a High-school diploma compared with 85% of the general public. 97.5% of all officers have college degrees; many enlisteds have college degrees, or are working on getting them, myself included. I just finished a year-long medical course worth 48 semester hours from George Washington University in Health Care Administration. The days when judges gave the choice of jail or joining the military are about 25-30 years past.
Americans in the service today are patriots answering a call that too few fellow citizens have the cajones to answer. Yeah, some join strictly for college money, but when the call for duty comes knocking, they answer...except the scumbags who fled to Canada. IMHO, and no offense intended, you owe your brother a "thank you"...then, give him a boot, tell him to put it on and you bend over....π (just kidding)
Originally posted by bbarrYou are partly/mostly correct, Bbarr, my friend. The Coast Guard has gained immensely from the "war on terror". Pay has never been better since somebody slipped the "Eagle" a laxative. ( When the eagle craps, I get paid... π). You are right about the sub-standard care received at VA hospitals. If nobody is fighting the terrorists, what good is a college education going to be? The Taliban wanted computers and technology about as much as a fish wants to breathe air. I agree that we must get out of Iraq, but it has to be due to victory. We can't lose this war or the world, not just the US, will pay a huge price.
I respect them enough to want them to have the support they need to get home safely, get an education, have a family. Too bad this administration has cut military benefits, health care for veterans, etc. Apparently the Republican notion of "supporting the troops" means sending them ill-equipped to war, failing to heed the strategic advice of military experts, and then pulling the rug out from under the feet of returning troops.
Originally posted by bbarrThe G.I Bill went the way of the dinosaur in 1976. There is a program called the Montgomery "G.I" program, where an active duty person contributes about $1,200.00, and after he/she gets out honorably, it will cover a lot of college expenses....is that the program you are referring too? The G.I. Bill that went extinct in 1976 didn't require a member to contribute any $$. After they got out, I think they had 10 years to take advantage of getting an education (BS, BA, etc.), and the gov't would finance most of it....one hell of a good program. That's how America dragged itself out of the Depression and prospered for the next 50 years....
Thank Roosevelt for the G.I. Bill. Let's hope they take advantage of it.
Originally posted by no1marauderI agree. In fact, I'm willing to part with one of my few important rec's to support your statement. People need to look at the issues - not some botched joke.

Pretty obvious that the Republicans are desperate in front of the mid term elections and trying to make a mountain out of a (non) molehill. Kerry's comments were clearly addressed to the lack of intelligence of our dimwit President, not the troops.

Kerry is THE botched joke.....
Originally posted by chancremechanicActually, the Montgomery Bill is just the latest in a series of incarnations the GI Bill has had (there wall also a Korean GI Bill and a Vietnam era Bill). I was using the term GI Bill to encompass all of these. This is probably one of the most successful government programs, both in moral and economic terms in our history.

Originally posted by chancremechanicSo, you claim that we have to get out of Iraq, but not until we are victorious. Sounds reasonable. Could you briefly sketch for me what you think an actual victory in Iraq would look like?

Originally posted by 7ate9I've done it before, but it's my first visit this time round.
And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will be cut off from among his people.
You sick whore!
Missed my first appointment cause of being sick, and then the second one I went to the wrong place.
I don't know, I just don't think it's going to help me much. Probably just make me more confusedππ
Originally posted by chancremechanicYou would do better to deal with the facts instead of insult those who disagree with you... but then, isn't this what the Republicans are all about!?

Originally posted by uzlessThat's because Harvard is full of elitists and snobs. who wouldn't make good soldiers anyways. It amazes me how Kerry can call Bush stupid when he had lowers test scores than Bush.
Granted, Kerry may or may not have been intentionally insulting the intellectual prowess of US troops.
But even if he was saying the troops aren't the brightest lights in the US, is he wrong?
Where do the recruiting officers go to recruit young people in the US? Most of it is in backwater towns in the middle of nowhere. The recruiters don't spend much time at Harvard and MIT lookin for new troops.
