An interesting interview.
It’s about white poverty in the US (well, the title does suggest it).
60.000.000 white people live in poverty. Seemingly if you have a minimum wage in the US, there’s not a county where you can afford a two bedroom apartment.
In totaal 800 deaths a day are due to this poverty (studies show - but not cited).
And yet, the US politicians aren’t really talking about it.
So poverty isn’t about being jobless.
What do you all make of it?
@shavixmir saidThe incredible rise in the net worth of the wealthiest people in the country has enabled them to buy up all the property, competing with the middle and lower classes and driving up housing costs.

A tax on property that is not the owner's primary residence would help solve this problem.
@AThousandYoung saidVarious states are mentioned, where the vote between presidential candidate A or B is less than 40.000 votes.
The incredible rise in the net worth of the wealthiest people in the country has enabled them to buy up all the property, competing with the middle and lower classes and driving up housing costs.
A tax on property that is not the owner's primary residence would help solve this problem.
And in each of these states there are more than a million poor people who don’t vote.
So they’re talking about mobilizing them, to force politicians to put poverty and how they plan to get rid of it centre stage.
Interestingly, as well, the man is on about systemic poverty (which obviously being a socialist, I agree with) being indescriminate of race. Yes, there is systemic racism too, but poverty is the problem that needs solving.
It would be good for the US, in my humble opinion, to get politicians to focus on poverty and solving it, rather than the tirades we keep hearing about one being smarter than the other and that sortnof rubbish.

That's because it's not a topic that's going to get a politician elected (or reelected) Corporate price gouging, an inadequate minimum wage, and unenforced labor laws are to blame for some of this.
Conservative hypocrites such as Republican farmers collecting billions in government farm subsidies, Republican politicians who preach self-reliance, then apply for billions in Federal disaster relief when a storm hits their state, and fat cat Conservative CEO's collecting hundreds of billions in grants, subsidies and other corporate welfare handouts for their corporations (while shaving off lavish pay packages for themselves) also share some of the blame.
American voters could change this if they wanted, but the Conservative propaganda machine ensures the "dumbing down" of America will go on -

It’s about moblization of people, forcing politicians to address the issue.
As my previous post mentions, they could easily sway an election.

@shavixmir saidIt’s just what I’ve been trying to get AvJoe to see in another thread here. America is awash in trivial comforts and luxuries and refuses to provide for people’s basic needs (food, water, shelter, medical care). It’s so easy, and it’s not as if America doesn’t have the resources to afford it. It’s just that the AvJoes of America cannot abide a ‘freeloader’ who might sneak a benefit he doesn't deserve.’ Fact is, America’s tycoons and CEOs WANT a permanently poor pool of disposable labor, people they can exploit and drop, hire and fire.

America, beware: this is exactly what Trump wants to do to the entire civil service (which he demonizes by calling it the deep state), he wants to be able to hire and fire the people who process driving licenses, count votes, perform tax audits, approve building permits and inspect bridges — those are civil servants, and Trump wants to be able fire them.

@shavixmir saidSway it to what? I think your only solution is to get successful people who made your computer to give it all up and feed the masses.....who will get hungry again.

Grind to a halt for the USA. After you get all that sustenance, it will be gone, eaten up, and you will want more. Where will it come from?

It literally explains how it works.
There are millions of potential voters who can't survive properly on a minimum wage and no politicians are taking them into account.
@shavixmir saidYou would have to define minimum wage, and define survive. A kid comes out of high school, does not marry or have kids, he can survive on 2 jobs and work up to advancement and make more money in the next job. I'm thinking that this has been going on for about 200 years....but, it does seem to be an issue in our more liberal society of the day. An example of a lib society is paying off tuitions while desperate citizens cannot make ends meet.

So, since it USED to work and you say it does not now, maybe that is the issue to be discussed.
For the record, there are some among us who strive to work for only 20 hours a week. That factoid needs to be factored in.

In most of Europe the minimal wage is based on a 40 hour work week.
And that should be enough to survive on in a normal and decent way.
If you have to work 80 hours to get by, then there’s something wrong. You can’t, for example, raise a family like that.
Watch the video. The interviewed guy makes it all much clearer.

What are the numbers?
That being said, this thread isn’t about European poverty, it’s about US poverty and getting those people to vote, to get politicians to come up with viable plans for them.
Don’t you think that’s an important issue?

@shavixmir saidYou make my point. You make what you make, and many people work two jobs. I once did, and by golly, got ahead in life.

But the crux, as you say, 'you can't raise a family like that.'.....that is the point. If you have kids before you can afford them, I think Moonbus and Zhalanzi et al think the government should raise them. On the other hand, a single gent can live on 2 jobs' income. So what is the problem. If he wants more money, a family, then he works and plans,,,,,like I and millions of others did.
If one cannot afford children, they should work 2 jobs until they can afford them. I feel like I speak to a brick wall. You don't like my logic, you walk away. You see this stupid person put himself in a hole, and, well, you don't want to talk about it. You could talk w SHouse about Jan 6 i guess.

@shavixmir said'Viable plans for them'. Give us an example, and I hope it is not take from the rich and give to the poor......we need the rich, Shav. They provide goods and services. WITH those goods and services, we grow and become entrepreneurs ourselves. The rich, and the people who work hard, grow our nation,..... the govt simply should get out of the way. Difficult for libs to grasp, as you have invited govt into your lives.
Really now.

I surmise that for you, the govt plans would be giveaway programs...you once said free housing. Whew.
