Hey unc,
I think that the WINe is more of a networking tool. But I don't know for sure. I read it a couple of years ago and the memory fades.
If i remember correctly, WINe is a curve on "vines" and that happy little scheme of networking peer to peer.
I have three "dead" computers that i am going to make into a "raging" giant someday. I a ...[text shortened]... ought? But that is how one learns. I'll let you know how it works. If I ever get time to do it.
WINE = Wine Is Not an Emulator ..
It is basicly an open-source implementation of windows API calls. Enabling you to run "Windows Applications" on x86 Linux. Because all (most) windows calls are available.

I've never played a Windows game under wine and would guess most don't work. There is a company that is hacking wine for specific games and I understand have got a lot of them to work. Some games are actually native to Linux these days too. However, just get a PS2/Xbox or whatever, they last longer, cost less than a good video card, plug into a nice big screen, are quieter, quicker to boot, use less power, etc etc etc. If gaming is important to you, linux isn't your OS yet I'm afraid. Having said that, if "Nethack" works on linux (which it does) what other game would you need.
Actually, nethack would probably be a natural game for people that appreciate chess and it works on all platforms. Go get it (it's free), play it for a while, wonder why anyone would like it and then suddenly get that flash of enlightenment as you find the sheer depth and beauty of probably the best bit of code ever written 🙂 Don't be put off by what it looks like http://www.nethack.org/common/info.html#Basic You'll save youself some money and never need another game again 🙂
