Serious request for information from Av Joe.

Australians can't understand "y'all" . It breaks my train of thought each time I see it. Does it mean "you all?" or is it a local dialect meaning something different?

Rather ask, 'does it mean all of you'. That is what it means. Yes, I am southern bred USA. When we hear north-speak, like 'you guys', it makes us cringe. A southerner is extremely respectful of women, we would not call one a guy. So, relative to our discussion, you-guys is simply an incomplete phrase,...it ignores the women in the crowd.
So, in such circumstance, we are left with how to address a group of people. So back to you, how would you suggest addressing the group, and why not say 'y'all? It is simply shortening you-all, in casual dialect. If one were delivering a speech, he/she might, more formally, say 'I appreciate your having me', or I would say 'It is a pleasure to speak to you this morning, you are quite the erudite group!'.
Think about it....We are all splitting up, I turn and say "I'll see y'all at the game." I cannot imagine saying 'I'll see you guys at the game'. What if there are 7 year-olds going to the game? I can't see them comfortably accepting being called guys, especially the little girls.
And, if I may, if I am talking to 2 people, I would say 'I'll see y'all later'. It would be quite awkward to say to 2 people 'I'll see you all later'. You all? There are only 2 of them! Maybe my best point.
One more note...'it breaks my train of thought'.? My wife's train of thought would be broken if she were cast off as a guy. She loves being a woman, and I want her to be.
Sorry I got so long. No one likes AvJoe and it was nice to have a simple conversation.

"You" in plural form. Equivalent to "vous" in French, "Ihr" in German.

You don’t say y’all outside of trailer parks, because it sounds retarded.

You say you. And you is, in this case, plural.

Thanks for that. In Oz we all say guys and nobody thinks of it as meaning exclusively male. Even our 70+ walking group (90% female) uses guys. We also say folks for groups, and if it's formal spoken English we say you, for both singular and plural. We don't get hung up on gender issues here.

Y'all is singular.

All y'alls is the proper plural.

Hope this helps.

Well, yes, laudits to Shav, figured out ' you' can be singular or plural. One could say moonlight, a singular light aiming at you, or moonlight as to all of the moonlight. Good stuff.
