i am from australia.

in australia we have a long history of murdering aboriginal people and calling it the death penalty. it was and still is clear genocide on a massive scale for two hundred years. it included poisoning wells of drinking water. at first it was just farmers "clearing the fauna from the land". later it involved police and laws and courts and "kangaroo courts".

it no longer happens that way. now we do it by giving them poor living conditions. aboriginal life expectancy is on par with the poorest countries on earth. white australians life expectancy is among the highest.

but to have a system, any system where it picks out a section of society and kills them ...WOW - STUPID AND DANGEROUS.

aboriginal australians have a massively disproportionate ammount of crime pinned on them also. and i am sure much of it is true, but wouldn't you if you came from that background?
grandma and grampa in jail, so is your sister and brother, the cops beat you up on sight. noone will give you a job. what else can you expect?
unfortunately they are probably almost certain to reoffend. it is a mess. a disgraceful well-hidden mess.

chancremechanic, i was not talking in particular regarding your posts, i was not even talking about the u.s.
i was talking about the death penalty. i say the u.s. should not kill blacks because you could end up like australia.

Point taken...I agree that we shouldn't kill blacks or anyone for that matter...just lock them (any race) up for an appropriate amount of time befitting the crime...poverty is no excuse to commit a crime. Both of my parents come from poor backgrounds, yet they are not criminals...thousands of people grow up in the ghettos of America, Europe, and Australia and become success stories..I do agree that poverty begats criminal behavior, but that is the responsibility of the perpetrator...and he/she should go to jail. Thanks for your input...

Diplomacy is saying "Nice doggie" while seardhing for a rock.

Seriously diplomacy and respect for your country is important. Not everything has a military solution. If you want to find your enemies who could be anywhere in the world, you need the co-operation and support of local people and police in places which may be neutral or hostile to your county. Call it soft power or the power of ideas as oppossed to military or hard power. Kennedy was probably the last president to have that - witness hsi recetption in Berlin.
