we also have longer personal talking distance, which sometimes manifests in rather ridiculous ways. like the latin guy trying to get closer to the finnish guy, and the finn desperately backing up trying to get that 20cm farther. 🙂 also kissing and touching is a no-no, and will drive the finns nuts even though they'll say it's okay. then again, nudity betwe ...[text shortened]... some situations. there's a long history of ridiculing foreigners wearing clothes in sauna. 🙂
Finns are strangely conservative when it comes to mixed nudity.
Almost everytime I go to the Netherlands I pop in the sauna, and I would say it is far more common to have mixed ones than not. Where here we have of the likes of Yrjönkatu, where one day is for gays and the other for gals.
Among good friends, though, it can go mixed, indeed.

I want to know if it's normal, at some point of the process, to feel like "freakin' A, I want to give up" ?
Some orientation would also be good. I'm tired. I read, think and type this brick every night after work. I'm burnt.

there's practically no emotions wasted on superficial situations. even a 'thanks' or 'please' is often a lot to ask. (just look at us two sunshines, me & jusuh for example.)
PHD students ... I've only known crack-pots. Good people, I hasten to add.
I was unable to motivate myself through an MA, I'd probably go postal if I had to complete a PHD. No doubt it's different for people studying real subjects outside the literature department ...

Two pieces of advice:
a)leave work with a small, routine task awaiting you. Checking stats or sources or something. But leave that on your desk for when you next sit down, to get you in the mood.
b)talk to other people!! Get their feedback, advice, comments as much as possible (and do the same in return). It helps to break up the monotony.
I remember arriving to start my PhD studies, and one of the people who had been there for a long time got up in front of us all, and drew a sine wave on the board. He said, this is your self-esteem on the y-axis, and time on the x. I found that to be basically true throughout my studies...You have small victories that make you feel great for a while, and then numbing troughs of despair where nothing goes right and you feel like a) you don't care about what you're doing, b) no-one cares about what you're doing, and c) no-one (including you) will ever care about it.
One thing that really got me through, was that I always reminded myself that being able to be an academic scientist was a gift, in the sense that you are your own boss, and you get to decide what happens in your lab, and essentially make the decisions on everything, including to spend your time investigating whatever interesting topic you want to. It certainly beats working for someone else hands-down, and makes those endless hours of quiet desperation worthwhile.
Good luck!
Originally posted by Seitseyeah, public sauna is different. I've always wondered how that came to be, as we're all raised up with mixed sauna. maybe it has something to do with war time and the army, where it's always guys only?
Same sex only, though.

but in any normal sauna environment, which pretty much means every household, it's almost always mixed. finnish films, especially the older ones, are also filled with innocent nudity. because it was never a big deal to show on screen body parts which I can't even write here because of the robomod.
