- He is 33 years old.
- He hasn't worked since age 15.
- He is an immigrant from Afganistan.
- He is on welfare.
- He receives free rent, $400 cash to spend per WEEK, and has "free tax council" (whatever that means).
- He seems t ...[text shortened]... s possible, or even commonplace in the UK. To me, this seems more than slightly ridiculous.
there are quite a lot of freeloaders around. the immigrants come in and get work straight away but those people have adjusted to living off benefits. once they adjust to that they are pretty much useless.
the system is bad, it facilitates dependancy and fraud.

The ordinary people care but the "authorities" appear not to.

If I could be bothered, I could dig out a news article about one who was in a supermarket and just piled masses of stuff into his trolley, at the checkout when he was told he didn't have enough money he went into a tirade shouting and screaming. The supermarket people phoned up the welfare who told them to just let him go with what he had.

And some people have loads of kids which then somehow entitles them to loads of extra cash. One guy on a TV program that I saw had 11 kids and was getting over £1000 a week. He was demanding that a larger house should be supplied [rent-free, of course] He was not an immigrant but it's not a rare situation in the UK. Great eh? 🙄

Yep, the UK encourages laziness, especially with the stupid tax credit system.

To show just how crappy the system is lets take 3 average couples who have two children each.

Couple A are wasters and husband works 25 hours a week for £150 (Gross) £6 per hour
His net pay after tax and NIC is £595 per month
Based on his situation he can claim child tax credits and working tax credits of £4,921 per year or an extra £410 per month

His net income per month is £1,005 for working 108.3 hours
This is a net hourly rate of £9.28

Couple B's husband works harder working 50 hours per week for £300 (Gross) £6 per hour
His net pay after tax and NIC is £1,030 per month
Based on his situation he can claim child tax credits and working tax credits of £3,324 per year or an extra £277 per month

His net income per month is £1,307 for working 216.6 hours
This is a net hourly rate of £6.04

Couple C's husband works hard working 60 hours per week for £500 (Gross) £8.33 per hour
His net pay after tax and NIC is £1,610 per month
Based on his situation he can claim child tax credits and working tax credits of £507 per year or an extra £42 per month

His net income per month is £1,652 for working 260 hours
This is a net hourly rate of £6.35

Couples B & C work long hours and their reward?

Couple B earns £302 more per month than Couple A but has to work an extra 108.3 hours.

Couple C earns £647 more per month than Couple A but has to work an extra 151.7 hours to do so.

The above are all genuine figures and just go to show that many people are actually better off sitting at home doing nothing, waiting for their next Government handout to hit their bank account.

Is it any wonder that people are flocking to Britain?

was this the same man whose wife and live in girlfriend were both pregnant too, or am i thinking of something else?

would it be feasible to pay people to visit those on benefits and work out if they should be on benefits or not? the money saved this way would pay for those doing the checking and thus britain would have a larger workforce and so (maybe) be more productive?

Well if that is considered a racist statement I would think 90% of us British people are racist. We are over-run by imigrants and asylum seekers. I'm sure a lot of people from other countries may not understand but most decent Brits are soooooooo pissed off by the problem and if we voice our concerns we are deemed to be rasicts. Where I live it is a MAJOR PROBLEM, one that is too complicated to be covered fully here on this wonderful chess site but I'm with you Dr

This was my understanding also, in the 6 weeks I've claimed over the past 12 years. Damn, if I'd known I'd be able to earn £400 a week without busting my pan, trying to make VP, well....life could have been so much different

Still excessive in my opinion - but as always, in a democratic society, there's always going to be a few exceptions, who know how to play the rules to their advantage.

PS - why would we talk about dollars, when referring to the UK from the initial post. To be pedantic that would be £196.62

I have to rec you there, as you mirror so many peoples views ! However, I haven't seen, heard or met many Hungarians oddly enough ! and of course the French and Germans find it too costly here. My Friend from Germany says it is too expensive and my friend from Tallinn, Estonia decided to up and off as he realised the cost was simply too much for him to stay ! and he was working here !!!
It certainly seems that it may be the cause of major discontent in times to come, that's for sure .
