To make a top 5:
1. Tom Waits
2. Bob Dylan
3. The Corries (Scottish folk music)
4. The velvet underground
5. Springsteen (pre-Born in the USA)
We are already on the second page of this thread and no-one mention the best band in the world - METALLICA -
I mean, for those of you not into metal, songs like
Nothing else matters or
Fade to black
could ring a bell, and for those of you into metal I have no words...
Master of puppets,
Ride the lightning
Kill em all ... (I could go on for another 20 legendary songs...)
METALLICA RULES (sorry eyepc, Maiden comes very close and so do a few other bands, but as I said METALLICA RULES, oh yeah and before I forget, they (based on Black Sabbath invented Heavy metal)
I like to finish this very emotional post of with a quote of James Hatfield himself - We are an icon, but we sure ain't done yet (MTV-Icon, 2003) ... AND THE LEGEND LIVES ON ...

Given my interest in anarchism, I have been listening to a lot of Utah Phillips recently, specifically his collaborations with Ani DiFranco. Their two discs together, Fellow Workers and The Past Didn't Go Anywhere sould be required listening for everyone.

I've listened to Mermaid Avenue vol.1 and 2, which Billy Bragg did with Wilco, but I've not listened to any of his other stuff. Any recommendations?
That's got all his best work on it.
"Talking with the taxman about poetry" is my favourite album of his, but all the best songs from it are on the afore mention compilation album.
His live concerts are excellent as well.
