This is annoying. Her age is irrelevant. My stepmother will be 87 next month and the only difference between her and a woman 40 years younger is that she needs a nap after spending hours shopping at the mall. No wheelchair or walker, does everything younger women do except have her period, which she really doesn't miss.

Age just means someone didn't die yet. It doesn't make them nice or sweet or harmless or innocent.

The issue should be -- and other people have mentioned this -- is whether or not tasers are right or wrong. Honestly, there's no difference in tasering a woman who's 72 and one who's 62, 52, 42, 32, or 22.

There is more chance at 72 of the person female or male, to have problems with the heart, than any of the ages you have mentioned. Age does certainly mean that they may have more health issues than a younger person.

Someone on here that had went through training, said they got tasered, and had been shot before, and would sooner be shot than tasered.

Not to say you can't have heart problems at younger age also. Are you quite confident your soon to be 87 year old stepmother could take a taser shot, with no problems from it? I certainly wouldn't want to bet a family members life on it.

If your Step mother is strong enough to play for the Chicago Bears and wears army boots God bless her. Most women at age 72 are not. Apparently you aren't 72 either. There is usually a difference in their muscle tone and their bone density at that age. Many are very frail and have major medical conditions at that age. Arthritis is common. I realize there are exceptions. My father at that age broke his hip from a simple standing fall. When he was a young man he was a wrestler. Age is a factor.

But you are correct, I don't think rasars should be used in non life threating situations. I also believe that many cops are actually using it as a device of torture. In fact I believe they get a thrill out of hurting people and as long as sick idiots support them when they do it, and enjoy seeing it,because of their own sick blood lusts then it will continue.

It just reflects very badly on the USA when some morons in an international forum defend the thugs who perpetrate these acts.

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25619277-5006003,00.html

A 72-YEAR-OLD great-grandmother chose the wrong policeman when she dared Deputy Constable Chris Bieze to Taser her.

Kathryn Winkfein made headlines last month after she was stopped by Const Bieze for speeding.

Caught doing nearly 100km/h in a 70km/h zone in Travis County, Texas, Ms Winkfein refused to accept the ticket.

The official police word was Ms Winkfein “mouthed off, then was physically non-compliant”.

Const Bieze's response was to send 50,000 volts through her body. Twice.

Ms Winkfein told her story to media outlets, claiming she did nothing to provoke the Taser “attack”.

But video footage released overnight from Const Bieze's car shows Winkfein swearing and shouting at the officer, then daring him to Taser her.

“You gonna shove me?” Ms Winkfein tells Const Bieze in the video. “You gonna shove a 72-year-old woman?”

“Step back or I’m going to Taser you,” she is told.

“Go ahead, Taser me,” she replies.

After five more warnings, the “combative” Ms Winkfein was then Tasered.

In the video, she can be seen screaming on the ground after being zapped by the 50,000-volt charge.

Const Bieze fires another jolt of electricity into her body when she tries to get up.

Precinct 3 Sergeant Major Gary Griffin told UK tabloid The Sun: "She was using language I wouldn't expect any woman to use, let alone a 72-year-old woman."

“There’s nobody that wanted this to happen any worse, than Deputy Chris Bieze."

Ms Winkfein did not require an ambulance and is yet to respond to the video footage.

The issue you guys have, is shat she is a 72 y/o granny. It didn't matter if she was 72 or 22, she was given 5 warnings she would be tasered and she was still combative. If someone cannot understand why you don't speed in a construction area then wanna get physical with the cop and not sign the ticket, then they probably need to be tasered.

I think it depends on the circumstances. There's probably going to be a big debate in the USA now about the motivation for using tasers, and it's probably going to go all the way up to congress.

I believe that tasers are indispensable in certain cases, like for policemen going to ambush a known criminal who is presumed armed and dangerous, or an escaped convict, or one of those paedophiles on To Catch a Predator who tries to run away. I also think that prison guards should be ordered to carry them.

Two days ago my mother's friend was violently mugged in the street (right next to where I live) by three men. So she bought a taser yesterday. I think you should be allowed to carry one for self defence. It's better than carrying a gun, and more effective than pepper spray.

Tasers are misused. Debate all you want about this case but the fact is that cops abuse people with their Tasers all the time. In my experience, policing has some of most dysfunctional and crazy people in one group. It attracts those with mental problems and huge egos. Cops find ways to abuse, it doesn't have to be Tasers. The Taser is just one more thing for them to play with. Sure, there are good cops out there, who do the right thing, who don't lose their temper and remain professional. Thank goodness there is a balance.

They have guns, for goodness sake, pepper spray, batons, Tasers. They're armed to the gills. If someone is truly dangerous, they have the training to do something about it and they do. They take that risk on with their chosen work. I think the Tasers are unnecessary, inhumane and used too often. I think it's dangerous to mess around with electric shock, due to the chance of inducing some type of arrythmia. I don't like the idea that cops can use them at their discretion. There's no reliable tracking for injuries resulting from Tasers. Some departments use them more than others. If somebody can dig up data that police departments with a high Taser rate are safer, I'd love to see it.

Just because it's non-lethal, doesn't mean it's right. I think it's ludicrous to shock an old woman because she's being a pain in the ass and cussing. I've seen combative behavior. That doesn't come close.

So intead of tasers you're suggesting they use their guns and batons?

No, I am suggesting they don't have tasers. A deadly weapon or a baton should be used WHEN necessary, and in the hands of a professional, skilled policeman (or other). I don't agree with your views, so don't use my post to suit.

I don't see the difference. You are saying that they should use guns/batons and not have tasers.

If the cop HADN'T had a taser or baton are you suggesting that he should have shot granny?

I'm thinking he probably could have handled her with no weapons and one hand tied behind his back. But maybe you're seeing something I'm not....
