Imagine is a great choice! Hey Jude by the Beatles or American Pie by Don McLean.

Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Don't stop me now - Queen
Grand Valse Brilliante - Chopin
I got life - Nina Simone
I am the resurrection - The Stone Roses
One by The Beatles, but I can't choose

And my personal favourite of the moment, though I'm not sure whether it should be in a best ever list, 'The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice'

Entweder "Aint no Sunshine" (I think Bill Withers wrote it, but Michael Jackson's is my favourite version), oder "Fairytale of New York"

My music collection has at least six different performers' versions of the Hank Williams, Sr. song "Jambalaya," so I have to figure on that scientific basis that it is my favorite bit of songwriting.

I thought Hank william's song was called "Kawliga".

I have different favs for different moods and styles.

Classical : Rondo alla turca - Mozart

The rose - Bette Midler (this would most likely be my choice for best written)

Best ever Song denotes the song that does the most for more people that universally touches us in some way. One of the big music mags said it was The Beatles - In My Life
Let it Be... gets stadium crowds going like to other but the repetition gets to me...
I didn't like Imagine musically and thought it was more of a greenies chant. (don't kick me for it.)
These songs are nice... but best.... no way.

We have Joe Cockers - You are so Beautiful.. that's a real song. It bites ya no matter how you sing it.

Recitar! from Vesti La Giubba I Pagliacci (Leoncavallo) would have to be still the most emotional song and one of the greatest ever ... over and above Nessun Dorma. But I doubt it has the appeal today.
I love collecting versions of these two songs.. Giuseppe Di Stefano and Mario Lanza were the best.
Shame the Italians caned Lanza for going to Hollywood... they are still down on him. He was the real deal with range power and feeling. Watch him in the Carusso Story playing the clown singing Recitar... wow... and the song is just fantastico.

Anyway... for anyday of the week try:
Van Morrison's - Where Flamingoes Fly
David Gray's - When the Flame Turns Blue...
Just can't do without those songs

For Muffin Lovers harken to Millie Jackson's version of Summer (The First Time)

We used to do a cajun version of Motzart's Turkish Rondo. T'was a bit surreal.

Classical - El Ultimo Tremolo (Una Limosnita por el amor de Dios) by Barrios.

Song for lyrics etc, Gordon Lightfoot - If I could read your mind
