Have you read "Reaper Man"? The best Pratchett book I've read so far. Though "Mort" and "Witches Abroad" were good too.
Anyone know anything about "The Colour of Magic" and "The Light Fantastic"? I haven't been able to get my ...[text shortened]... d they are a great read and have something to do with octarine ๐

Hi everyone, jumping into this one a little late, but I just finished 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel, it's incredible. The story of a young Indian boy whose family decide to emigrate to Canada, except that their ship sinks en route, and he becomes marooned in a lifeboat with only animals for company...
Heartily recommended to anyone who needs a lift...

Did anyone catch the news a week or two ago? Madonna has written a children’s book, and went to some school to read it for publicity. The part I heard her read out sounded very formulaic and rather silly, but one thing that had me rolling on the floor was when someone said she was going to be the next Enid Blyton. Madonna replied "Who's Enid Blyton?"

It's about time we had another book thread.
What I'm reading at the moment.
FootFall by Niven & Pournelle.
SciFi Novel, and a big one at that. Haven't decided whether I like this yet. It's definitely slow to get going.
Lets see, from previous comments:
Order of Pratchet books: the only really big follow-on is in the first two (colour of magic, a good book if you already know a LOT of sf/f, not great if you don't), then the light fantastic, which is a more accessable book to all.
Footfall (Niven and Pournelle)
Really not very good. 'The Mote in God's Eye' was a stormer though.
Other to consider:
Ursula LeGuin (The Earthsea series and 'The city of illusions'๐
Moorcock: 'Dancers at the end of time' series
Anything by John Irvin
Most by Joseph Heller, particularly 'Catch 22', 'Picture This' and 'God Knows'
Iain Banks (with or without the 'M': M is for sf/f. Older stuff better than newer, particlarly amounst the non-M choices) edit: don't go for 'Canal Dreams' or 'Walking on Glass'. Or at least, don't blame me if you do...
As to what I'm reading right now:
McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy (its OK), to be folllowed by 'Art to choke hearts & p*ssing in the gene pool' by Henry Rollins, which I'm looking forward to!
And one I haven't got by Arthur Herman: "How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It". No reason why I mention it...
PS Interesting that nobody's mentioned JRRT yet....

I am now currently reading "The Falcon's Malteser" by Antoney (sp?) Horowitz. ๐

Anyone know ambrose bierce?
By the way... Uncle John was decorated for his part in the battle. Later lost his life racing motorcycles on wooden tracks in chicago.

Originally posted by Black LungGreat stuff! I love good 'digging' humor. I will want to read more. He was definitely a "reporter" rather than a novelist. Thanks.
