He would be under the ice during the first few seconds of cold shock and his body would automatically try to go into rapid breathing, sucking in cold water into his lungs and then drowning.
He's probably lucky there was a sheet of ice there or he would be dead right now.

Every New Years day here in Nova Scotia hundreds go for a dunk in the water. I've not heard of any of them ever having a problem.

it kinda happens only after you resurface. THEN you gasp for air even if you were under only for a second.
it's extremely healthy, improves cardio and boosts up your immunity system so you'll never have flue again. does wonders to arthyritis pains as well many people say. but I don't have it so wouldn't know.
