One would have to feel sorry for the poor bugger, if he wasn't so stupied!

I know he wasn't Canadian. The canuck would have cut a hole in the ice first. 😉

If he was planning on diving under the ice sheet, and that looks like what he was attempting, he had no way of dealing with the initial cold shock body response, hyperventilation.
He would be under the ice during the first few seconds of cold shock and his body would automatically try to go into rapid breathing, sucking in cold water into his lungs and then drowning.
He's probably lucky there was a sheet of ice there or he would be dead right now.

You probably haven't heard of the Polar Bear club that strip down to their bathing trunks, cut a large hole in the ice, & go for a dip!!!

Every New Years day here in Nova Scotia hundreds go for a dunk in the water. I've not heard of any of them ever having a problem.

Perhaps Canadians are just tougher than most. 😏

We also have a polar plunge, but no ice cutting is involved. Jump right in the ocean. Next everyone goes to the bar for beer and eggs.

I would think there is a big difference between being in the icy water and being under the ice in icy water.

We have the same Polar Bear plunge here on New Year's Day, I'm sure it's a common practice around the world.

It is ok, so long as you can find the hole to come back up, if not you won't be worrying about it for very long. 😉

I think the first thing those nut jobs do is wrap blankets around themselves and try and warm up...LOL... Hell even the kids do it, there should be a law against that!

Not my kind of way to start the New Year. 😉

doesn't happen. you can easily supress the urge to inhale when you go under.

it kinda happens only after you resurface. THEN you gasp for air even if you were under only for a second.

it's extremely healthy, improves cardio and boosts up your immunity system so you'll never have flue again. does wonders to arthyritis pains as well many people say. but I don't have it so wouldn't know.
